Project - Lever-Action Boxes #3: Carcase Assembly

767 days ago by Dekker | 8 comments »

Wow. I’ve had a busy weekend, but unfortunately I was not able to finish as much as I wanted. Since I knew I was going to be using my router, I first fixed the problem I had with it. I cut my stock to width and length, and I regret having cut the carcase pieces it to length. This made the next step, running it through the router, much trickier, since I had to use my push-pad to control a 3-1/2” long piece as it was getting a rabbet cut on it! It wanted to pull itself into th...

Sassafras Box - a True Learning Experience

772 days ago by cajunpen | 15 comments »

About 3 years ago my wife and I were on vacation in Arkansas. I appropriated a slab of Sassafras from a woodworker that I had befriended. We were actually in a State Park that had huts set up with demonstrations of the way things were done a century ago – very interesting. Anyway, I got this slab, which is about 2 feet in diameter and about 5” thick. I carried it onto the tour bus that was taking us back to our hotel – people thought that I was crazy, my wife was way ah...

Celtic Knot Pens #1: One way to do it

812 days ago by Gary | 16 comments »

This was requested from multiple sites, so I did one for everybody. Here’s some photos of my process;I only had enough time to do a two-ring knot, but it’sall the same to make a four-ring knot accurately if you follow these steps. This shows the miter sled, the length of contrasting wood for the slices, and the bloodwood blank I’m going to use. I’ve already squared the blank so that all four sides are the same size.I randomly pick a side and mark it 1.Side 2 i...

Making a Small Wooden Box #1: Getting Started

839 days ago by Don | 22 comments »

I blogged a couple of weeks ago about what I should charge for a small box I was asked to make. I thought that those of you who haven’t delved into the wonderful world of box making might like to journey along with me as I make this commissioned box. I was given the outside dimension for the box, as the owner intends to place it in a chest of drawers, so it must fit the size constraints of the drawer. The box will be 95mm high x 360mm wide x 240mm deep (approximately 3.75” x 14...

Tools #3: Incra Mitre Express / Incra 1000SE Mitre Gauge - VIDEO

909 days ago by mot | 12 comments »

I wanted to add to the mitre gauge posts. Wayne posted a photo tour of the Jessem System, and David posted initial impressions of the Kreg System. The incra 1000SE is seen here in the Incra Miter Express sled. Both are available at Woodpeck.com You can see the kerf where the mitre sled straddles the blade in the tablesaw allowing for the cutoff piece to be coplanar with the workpiece. This decreases the chance of the saw flinging the cutoff piece back. The Incra guage is adjutab...
