Finishing the lidI wanted to get the lid to fit tight, so I cut a piece of ply to fit the box and then centered it under the lid. I used this to scribe my layout lines.I taped the corners of the box to help minimize tearout. Pushstick was used for actual operation. I busted out Wonder Boy for trimming the lid to perfection.Finished rabbet. (Note Kristin’s toes)I cut and glued more keys to secure the miters.I used a file to follow the plane this time. As long as you work away from the co...

BillWe lost Kristin’s Grandpa Bill on June 13th. I have more to say about him when I post the final project. For now, I will say we miss him very much.
I volunteered to make an urn for his ashes. The memorial is on Saturday, so I am on a timetable.
Take OneI read Gary Rogowski’s great Fine Woodworking article on mitered boxes and then SketchedUp a basic plan based on the size of box that the memorial home requested.
I originally intended to make the box from a pine board...

This very large, commissioned credenza was designed as an entertainment center to sit below a big, wall mounted, plasma TV. It is 76” wide 24-1/2” deep, and 34” tall. The cabinet and base are all solid walnut and the doors are bookmatched walnut burl veneers both inside and out.
But first I want to thank everyone who visited and responded to my last blog;
A glass top table with opposing arches
And as always, I welcome your comments AND critiques on this latest project.
The mai...

When I returned to woodworking several years ago my nephew had been talking about a particular style of “coffee” table he’d seen online somewhere and was describing it to me. Since he’d just announced plans to marry, I told him I’d make him, and his fiancée, the table as a wedding gift.
He showed me some online photos of the table, which I used as the basic, general design plan. The joinery I chose is original but the style was taken from the photos.
This piece is the result:

When I asked for feedback on how to glue up the frame pieces for the lid to the box I’m working on, Luis had suggested that I not glue the miters, but rather chop little mortises in the miters and glue in some floating tenons. The only problem is that with the size of my miters, they would have to be very tiny mortises, and I just didn’t have it in me to do it. So here’s what I came up with: “T Keys”. I decided to run grooves down the length of the mortise, creat...

NOTE: As is my custom, my list of newbie questions are at the end of this post.
So a week or two ago I wrote about my plans for the box lid. In short, it was going to have mitered edges with a thin strip of the lighter-colored sapwood (would you call it an inlay?) in between the mitered edges and the center piece. Today I took advantage of the Saturday down time to try to make it happen.
A few days ago, I resawed a small block of wood 1/2” thick and ripped it into four pieces each...

I felt like building something small and box-like this weekend. (Time to play with the new saw too). So I headed to the scrap pile. My goal was to chase the grain around the outside of the box. Just for fun.
After a false start I got the hang of it. It is kind of mind twisting.
How it workedI found a nice specimen.A piece of neglected walnut.
After jointing
Resawn to bookmatch. A cool little pattern.
Checking out the grain pattern after cutting 45 degree miters. It actually wra...

Well, as I said in last night’s blog, today I started 3 projects that I need to finish in time to send off before Christmas. So I guess my insomnia paid off though because I was able to draw up my plans, measure and mark all my wood last night which made cutting today go allot quicker.
So, today between baking pies and pumpkin bread, I managed to cut all my pieces to length, rip them to width, and miter the ends. Not bad for a days work.
Heres some pics/teasers…
1st pic...

Alright, I’m ready to do some real woodwork now. I finally finished my last two table saw jigs. This time I made a miter sled and a key slot jig (spline jig?). I will make more jigs/sleds as I need them, but I think that the three I’ve made recently should be a good start with my new TS. So, heres a couple of pictures, and as always comments and suggestions are welcome (I came here to learn).

Well, over the weekend, I was only able to do limited work on my boxes. You see, I discovered the reason for my “clamping issues” on my lever-action boxes… My miter saw is out of adjustment! My 45’ angles were NOT 45’!
So I took a 2×4, jointed it then planed it, then spent the next hour chopping the h311 out of it, adjusting the blade after every chop, until it was giving me perfectly accurate 45’ angles. I also adjusted it for 90’ angles.
