I blogged a couple of weeks ago about what I should charge for a small box I was asked to make.
I thought that those of you who haven’t delved into the wonderful world of box making might like to journey along with me as I make this commissioned box. I was given the outside dimension for the box, as the owner intends to place it in a chest of drawers, so it must fit the size constraints of the drawer. This very large, commissioned credenza was designed as an entertainment center to sit below a big, wall mounted, plasma TV. It is 76” wide 24-1/2” deep, and 34” tall. The cabinet and base are all solid walnut and the doors are bookmatched walnut burl veneers both inside and out.

I felt like building something small and box-like this weekend. (Time to play with the new saw too). So I headed to the scrap pile. My goal was to chase the grain around the outside of the box. Just for fun.
After a false start I got the hang of it. It is kind of mind twisting.

This was requested from multiple sites, so I did one for everybody.
Here’s some photos of my process;I only had enough time to do a two-ring knot, but it’sall the same to make a four-ring knot accurately if you follow these steps.
This shows the miter sled, the length of contrasting wood for the slices, and the bloodwood blank I’m going to use.

David posted pictures of his new miter gauge and was looking for some pictures of other miter gauges. I commited to show some pictures of my Jessem miter guage.
The first step in using my table saw is removing the Peacock. (Deb has named him LJ).
The box on top of the table saw is a Biesmeyer Over Arm Saw guard that is waiting to be installed.

So in my first blog entry I touched on my dust collection progress. About 3 years ago my wife and I were on vacation in Arkansas. I appropriated a slab of Sassafras from a woodworker that I had befriended. We were actually in a State Park that had huts set up with demonstrations of the way things were done a century ago – very interesting. Do you watch that UGLY BETTY show?
I don’t. I don’t even have a TV! Well… if they made one completely out of wood, I’D BE THERE!!!!

When I returned to woodworking several years ago my nephew had been talking about a particular style of “coffee” table he’d seen online somewhere and was describing it to me. Since he’d just announced plans to marry, I told him I’d make him, and his fiancée, the table as a wedding gift.
He showed me some online photos of the table, which I used as the basic, general design plan. The joinery I chose is original but the style was taken from the photos.

I wanted to add to the mitre gauge posts. Wayne posted a photo tour of the Jessem System, and David posted initial impressions of the Kreg System.
The incra 1000SE is seen here in the Incra Miter Express sled. Both are available at Woodpeck.com You can see the kerf where the mitre sled straddles the blade in the tablesaw allowing for the cutoff piece to be coplanar with the workpiece. This decreases the chance of the saw flinging the cutoff piece back.
