Making a Condiment Tote (for beginners) #4: Making the handle and finishing the tote

531 days ago by ~Julie~ | 8 comments »

Now that we have the size of the handle piece, the actual handle has to be cut out of it.For now I keep the piece as a rectangle, and will do the angled sides after the handle is cut out. I’m using my router and a template guide to remove the area for the handle. First I need to make a template out of hardboard that is 11/32” larger than the actual size of the oval hole that I want. I determined a hole 3 1/2” long and 1 1/8” wide for the handle would be good for t...

My new work bench

819 days ago by Tinnocker | 5 comments »

When my darling wife allowed me to use our family room as my wood shop I needed to make a bench. living on a fixed income causes me to be very creative in acquiring tools and materials. I have posted about Freecycle before so I won’t rehash that again unless anyone has any specific questions. Anyway I did some dumpster diving and was able to get a few old solid wood doors, which I promptly took apart and made a down and dirty work bench. It was ugly and a bit wobbly but it served it&...

Building the shop #8: The wall is up!!!

490 days ago by MrMeasureTwice | 5 comments »

Saturday… 0630… In the car heading to Lowe’s for the last few items needed to make the piece of my garage a real shop. Kind of like Pinocchio wanting to be a real boy – my 1/3 of the 3-car garage WANTS to be a woodshop, and I am the maker, Geppetto, who has been carefully, slowly (too slow) making that piece of the garage into a shop. Rich, my neighbor across the street, and, a “sheetrock guy” by trade, has offered to help my little piece of heaven becom...

Well after a few computer issues, the long awaited part 2 of this project is here. I’m a good woodworker, not so much a good PC tech guy..lol So with the help of some true computer gurus, I was able to render this video, get it uploaded and out to you… given the size of the video, I added a Part 3 to this series which will be the conclusion of the project. Be sure to stop by the website A Simple Design of Ocala or find me on Facebook

From log to box in less than a month #1: The kickoff

21 days ago by sras | 12 comments »

A friend at my church made me an offer: ”I’ll give you some wood if you’ll build something with it for the youth auction at the church” He made the offer several weeks ago, but I didn’t get around to picking up the wood until last Sunday! That gives me just under 4 weeks to take the wood, figure out a project, build it and finish it. That should be plenty of time, but my projects typically take months or years ! After pondering my choices, I picked these...

Bathroom Remodel #1: Creative Bathroom Remodel

1199 days ago by Dennis Fletcher | 3 comments »

Well, I was supposed to just replace the old vanity with some cabinets that they got from a friend, because the cabinets they got were in better condition than the ones currently in the house. Seemed pretty straight forward, nothing really difficult or interesting to see here, folks, so move along…..... Oh, wait, nothing fits right, go figure. Yes, their simple switch out turned to a bit more, but they are really enjoying it. I had to put together 3 cabinets, bring them out ...

Miter Bench and Storage #8: Time to puts some drawers in!

1787 days ago by sIKE | 5 comments »

I managed to finish milling the drawer fronts/sides/backs this past Sunday and started the assembly process. Due to the lack of clamps and only being able to get two setups at a time (and of course my day job), I finally finished up today. Here are all ten of them in all of thier glory. With darkness closing in this evening and the the wife not so happy I pressed on through and mounted the first two drawers. They need a bit of fine tuning but they are in. I can see the end of the tunnel...

Out of the scrap pile and into a gift #5: Arched Candle Holder - On to New Heights

1245 days ago by sras | 3 comments »

It seems like the arched form needs to be lifted off the table by some amount. I’m not sure by how much. My technique in situations like this is choose from a range. Start with too little and keep adding until it seems like too much. Somehwere in between “too little” and “too much” there should be a “just right” or at least a “close enough”!In this case I start adding spacers underneath each end. Here is the range of heights. The wi...
