Tips for Picking Saw Blades

12-15-2009 10:42 PM by knotscott | 35 comments »

-updated 2/4/2015 Good blades are analogous to good tires on a performance car…they can ultimately determine or limit the resulting performance. There are a number of different factors that should be considered in saw blade selection. Decent quality is essential or you’re sunk from the beginning, so skip the clunkers even if they’re a “good deal”. Two inferior saw blades that cost the same as one decent saw blade are still inferior. It’s sort of like having t...

Key Holder: Closer

12-01-2009 08:21 AM by Seth | 7 comments »

After Thanksgivings #s two and three, after two days of painting our bedroom and cleaning up the mess that created, it was finally time to turn my attention to the keyholder. My dad was nice enough to give me his inherited router, which was the piece of equipment that lit a fire under my hobby-searching self. For some reason, the idea of rounding edges or being able to cut canals out of wood made the whole thing a lot more appealing. Here’s my makeshift workshop: That’...

Chop Saw Dust Hood #3: Outlet & Saw Swivel Clearance

11-30-2009 06:30 PM by BlankMan | 2 comments »

Well, I didn’t get to spend as much time over the 4 day Thanksgiving Holiday weekend as I wanted to working on this but I made some progress. I was actually hoping to have it done but not having the time and having to determine and make the template to do the cutout for the saw swivel clearance took a while. The cutout is not a continuous arc of the same radius because you need clearance for the guard here, the handle there and then the motor. And determining where to put the outlet was...

First self designed piece of furniture #1: Almost built, getting close to the finishing stage

11-29-2009 04:09 AM by drfixit | 2 comments »

This is the first peice of furniture I have designed and built. It is a small table to sit between my parents two recliners. The slide out drawer will contain a small trash can that can be hidden when not in use. It is made of red oak. Trying to match some of the furniture thay have I made the profile around the top using the table saw, a 1/2” round over bit, and a 1/4” round nose bit. It still needs to be sanded down and will be stained pecan. The top is recessed for a piec...

Chop Saw Dust Hood #2: Top & Bottom of the Plenum Box Added

11-26-2009 12:15 PM by BlankMan | 7 comments »

Now I’ve added the top and bottom to the plenum box in the back of the collection hood. The idea of the plenum box is to equally distribute the vacuum along the whole length of the opening to collect the sawdust. The 4” duct will connect to the top of the box, inside the plenum 2/3 down from the top is a divider board that splits the box into two chambers. The divider board has three holes in it, a 2-1/4” hole in the middle and two 2-3/8” holes one at each end. What I ...

Chop Saw Dust Hood #1: Top, middle rail, and back glued in place

11-25-2009 08:34 AM by BlankMan | 13 comments »

Well Sunday I finally got around to start building a new dust collection hood for behind my new miter saw. I had one behind my old miter saw but this new saw is wider and I had to redo the bench for it to fit thus making the old hood too small to cover the area needed. Been without one for about a year because I also picked up the Delta 12” RAS and had to redo the bench for that to fit also. So I wasn’t about to build a hood until both the RAS and miter saw were firmly mounted in ...

Bookrack Project Part 1

11-22-2009 05:12 AM by davidroberts | 1 comment »

I’ve been working on this bookrack project for the past two months and we finished today. It is for my son’s Eagle Scout project. The idea came from a charity resale shop our boy scout troop supports. My son wanted to build something for them so we ask what they needed. They said a paperback bookrack. I must admit, this would not have been my first choice, but hey, we gave it a shot. The next few pictures will get you through about half the project, then I’ll post the ...

Grain Matching Corners on a Box #1: How Many Can You do?

11-12-2009 04:11 AM by scrappy | 11 comments »

I have been doing some thinking about Grain Matching corners. We all see boxes that the wood has been wraped around to match 3 corners, but the 4th is allways off. I think I have come up with a way to match all 4 sides. I will be making a box when I can get back in the shop.(hurt my shoulder and LOML won’t let me play until next week) Will take step by step pics and post in this series for everyone. Keep an eye open for updates. If anyone else has a process for this, feel free ...
