I did a little trading at work a while back and ended up with a nice pair of “Stile and Rail” router bits. They are identical to these only they were Freud brand:
I was really excited about these bits because my kitchen cabinets are a project that has been put on hold for over a year and these will really help me finish the doors. I had never used these bits before.
I did a test cut of both joints and it fit together so sweet:
I measured twice and double che...

Sometimes “mistakes” can actually be opportunities in disguise.
One example was Edison’s attempt to make a telegraphic-telephonic repeating and recording device, it didn’t work, but when somebody gave it a spin it sounded like human speech. Edison started from that chance observation and developed the phonograph.
It can also happen in the shop.
In my latest project posting “I had Twins!” I turned would could have been a disaster into a chance to ge...

After last week’s ongoing progress, it felt a bit slow this week (which it is), but I did have some things I wanted to share, and also was able to finish the base with 3 coats of BLO which is what I’m going to keep on it for conditioning the wood, and protecting it from moisture.
Mistake #1: Drawboring to the wrong side (cringe) 2 legs on each side of the base are connected together using 2 short rails. The top one is using a sliding dovetail, while the lower one uses M&T. ...

THANK YOU ALL!!! One hundred times…THANK YOU!!!
When my router went awry…well, I could’ve cried. So many hours of work and I didn’t believe my mother’s gift could be salvaged. I sent out an SOS and boy did you all respond. Your ideas, tips and tricks were amazing but most of all your encouragment left me believing that I could FIX IT!
So I headed downstairs and attempted my FIRST EVER patch job. While not perfect I think it’ll look just fine afte...

So, I’ve been down in the workshop just plugging away at a surprise gift for my mother. She thinks I’m working on a door for my Uncle’s 75th b-day (and I will~~eventually) but instead I’m working on a screen door as a gift for Mother’s Day. I’ve got about 16 hours of work in the jigsawing and carving and probably just as many in the design process. ! It’s the most complicated door I’ve ever attempted and it was going well until… my route...

When I left off I was ready to glue up the apron and legs.
So in my excitement to see it take shape, I did a little last minute trimming of the tenons and one more dry fit, and then started assembling it with glue in sections.
Here’s the front:
And the back:
Then I dry fit the two sections together with the side aprons for the final glue up:
Which is when it occurred to me… was something missing? THE DRAWERS!!!
I forgot to cut the drawers out of ...

I am building a project for my senior thesis. Its a shaker style table that will be cut in half. One half will be built as close to perfect as I can make it with beautiful wood, and intricate joinery. The other half will be loaded with mistakes including poor wood selection, not accounting for seasonal movement, bad joinery, and anything else I can come up with. This is where I need help. Please let me know what mistakes you have made in building furniture, or any ideas that you may have to ...
