Video Journey - Oak Dovetailed Blanket Chest
I recently finished a dovetailed blanket chest as a wedding gift for my good friend. I think it came out pretty nice. I was able to get it into his house while he was away on his honeymoon. My First Indoor Project
This is my 1st attempt at building an indoor piece. I wanted a wall table for my office. It is made of red oak. I purchased some red oak on craiglist for $40.00. Most of it was only 3-5 inches wide with mitre cuts on one side. I cut off the mitres and used my table saw and planer to square the pieces up. I glued up pieces for the majority of the project. Limbert Lamp Table - Stickley #240 #7: Fumearama
After letting the glue cure overnight, I took it out of the clamps and gave it a final hand sanding. Not too bad, but could be better. I think next time I’ll err on making the legs touch on the outside corners instead of a flat meeting. This caused some gappage that I filled with putty. I couldn’t find any reference for this on the site, so if I am re-posting the obvious, please forgive me. Project Gutenburg has 3 very detailed books on building mission furniture. they contain detailed plans (although not as detailed as some modern books) and they have LOTS of plans in them. Limbert Lamp Table - Stickley #240 #8: Ammonia Fume Finish
Well, after three days in solitary, I decided to pop the the weasel. The different boards fumed to different tones, but I think with shellac and brown furniture wax, it’ll be just non-perfect enough for some charm. The wood putty had no tannins in it, so it’s almost white. Luckily, one corner is perfect, so that’ll be the one facing out. I’m working on building an Arts and Crafts style Panel bed. The bed is inspired by the Stickley Bed pictured below. There’s three videos in the series so far, and I hope to have more out soon.
