Laminated Walnut Bowl #2: Finishing up the outside

After I got home from work today I headed out to the hot (over 100F) workshop to complete the outside. I started sanding and then I got the gouge out again because I figured it would be easier to smooth off the top while it was in its most stable position. I then worked up from 150 to 320 sandpaper, but while doing the 320 I noticed that I hadn’t quite gotten the transition from the body to the lip good enough. A few weeks ago Michael Mode did a demo for some members of the Front Range Woodturners here in Denver. His demo was good enough that I thought I might be able to do that and I gave it a try. It was a 5 layer bowl out of some mystery wood and it turned out OK. I thought it was a bit rough and that I depended entirely too much on my 60 and 80 grit turning tools to finish it off.
