Workbench #1: Workbench kick off

As a home owner I’ve struggled for years with projects because I don’t have a solid work surface. When I started wood carving recently this became painfully obvious. So now I’ve decided to invest in a proper workbench. After looking at 100s of benches online and in books I think I know what I want: Size: 6’ long, 24” deep. This will fit my workspace well. I’m probably writing something that many people already know, but I’m writing this as much for myself, to remind me later what I’ve learned, as for any others out there for whom this is new. A Visit to a Malaysian Sawmill

I knew of a sawmill that was only about a minute’s drive from one of the places we used to live when I was getting my Master’s degree. Since I had to go down to the university on some business the other day, I thought I’d pay the sawmill a visit and get the low-down on what was available. My Workbench #2: Questions About the Top

I have to say, the thought of trying to flatten 16(ish) boards entirely by hand (for the bench top) is a bit daunting. But I lined up the six I have done a cursory planing on, and they look like they mostly line up. Of course, I think they all have a slight bow, but at least they’re all bowing to the same extent. It’ll be an artistic bench with the “bent” look. ;^) But I do have a couple questions for you all, and I know that at least a few of you won’t disapp...
