Progress Photos: Building Rachel's Woodie Hoop (round wood toy inspired by a hoola hoop)

18 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 24 comments »

With all of the “Hoopla” associated with my recent blog, and Quixote's Project posting on the subject, I just about had to submit and build the toy for her. After all, using the thorough 2-Step plans she provided, how hard could it be? Well, just count all of the Steps I used, and add up the dollar amount of all of the tools I used in the process, and it’s a pretty daunting little project, for a fact. Sure, buying a plastic ring at the big department store would be ch...

Plans for Making A Wooden Hoola Hoop for a 7 Year Old Girl - By Rachel DeCou

21 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 32 comments »

This blog entry today is somewhat woodworking related, and the content has mostly been provided by my daughter Rachel, a student of woodworking, at least in the way I do woodworking. She’s been hanging out in the shop all afternoon since the grade school decided to call off school today because the Cottonwood River was up so high, cutting off roads around the County today. I’m enjoying her presence in the shop, but I hope the water is down tomorrow so she can learn something w...

A Bit of Rambling about a Beautiful Sunny Day, and Being Bummed Out about A Stolen Knife

28 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 12 comments »

I awoke this morning to a dreary, cold, very foggy day. I don’t mind fog, my morning commute to work is only about 40 feet behind the house, and a little fog doesn’t slow me down much walking out there. Actually, it is mornings like this that I’m reminded how much I have to be thankful for. Back in the days when I had to commute by car 87 miles to Wichita, a foggy morning like this one was a real burden, even treacherous. I always write on the calendar when we have ...

Concept Sketch: Barak Obama for President 2008, Carved Bust Top Political Figure Collector Cane

33 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 10 comments »

Another short Blog entry to post a concept sketch of a Barak Obama for President 2008 Walking Cane. This cane design has been inspired by several historical examples of Election and Political Figure “Bust Top” collector walking canes. Disclaimer: I am not attempting to make any type of Political Statement, or to purport that Obama is “my” candidate, with this cane design. On the other hand, it looks like a fun one to carve, and I hope the project goes through f...

Design Sketches: "Welsh-Inspired" Market Crook Stick with Carved Border Collie Herding Dog

33 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 4 comments »

This is a simple Blog entry to post a couple of concept sketches for a Walking Stick design that I’ve been asked to build. The Blog Format is an easy way for me to post the sketches for a client to look at, and saves sending out large sized emails. The other positive side of using my blog this way, is that others that follow my work can see new things I’m getting ready to do, and it also introduces new folks to my work. I wish I could demonstrate to my LJ buddies my exper...

Hat Making Tool: Prototypes #1 & #2 of the DeCou Studio Formillion and Conformer

42 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 5 comments »

Well, I had romantic notions of making my #100 Blog Entry a big to-do with a long and folksy Kansas Flint Hills Tour Guide with lots of cross linked information about the area where I live and work. It is a great area, and the rest of the world is starting to take notice. Previously, I enjoyed the feed back from when I wrote about a Tallgrass Prairie Fire Party, and a Kansas Flint Hills Hot Air Balloon Ride. But, I just haven’t had time to spend on the keyboard with non-business re...
