Chess Men and board #1: Prototype design

498 days ago by woodboxman | 4 comments »

So, I’ve always wanted to turn some chess figures and build a Chess board. I have been tinkering around with some designs and finally turned a first design prototype. I already don’t like the lack of taper to the top. this piece, the bishop is 3 1/2 inches tall.I’m gonna make the pawns 2 3/4 inches, the Rooks 3 1/4 inches, knights 3 1/2, queen 4 inches and the king will be 4 inches. The squares will be 2 inches. The light wood is Maple i think and the dark wood is Walnut...

"Un-Covering an Old Friend" --by RusticWoodArt

578 days ago by frank | 4 comments »

Un-Covering an Old Friend ....and so it was in the now of ever, that I heard your sigh of wishing endeavor, till i knew the time had come for moments un-veiling,as i stood before your monolithic scaling…. —-to your sleeping time of years gone by, there is this awakening of joy-full cry, and i am also jumping within the soul of your tree, since won’t be long till we are art-fully free… I love to tell stories, and story telling of old trees is what I am purposed ...

Making the Celtic Knot Rolling Pin #3: Making the Saw Cuts For the Strips

59 days ago by lew | 3 comments »

Once the blank has the layout lines drawn, it is time to cut the slots for the ellipses. The first step is to set the blade height. When the cut is made, there should be about 1/8” of material left holding the two sides together. This really aids in the glue up by keeping the pieces aligned. Set the blank on the jig and adjust the angle and the end stop so that the front SHORTER layout line is positioned to the LEFT side of the blade cut. Orientation is when you are standin...

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #32: My Soul of Maple

74 days ago by frank | 3 comments »

My Soul of Maple Oh how the warmth of your glow, tolerates my being….—i feel as though there remains a connection,as we pass into fall….—why it was only yesterday that a seed fell to ground, much like in the beginning….—our time together often grows weary,as in the exiled seasons…. Can our love still survive against the onslaught, of hurled bark insulation….—where were it not for fire burnished passions, coming forth as desire̷...

Constructing "Old 99" #15: The couplers

87 days ago by MrWoody | 3 comments »

Before I left the shop last night, I drilled a 5/16” hole at the inside of the car coupler. This morning I cut, sanded, sanded, and sanded some more to shape both couplers. I cut 4 axles to length and glued one wheel on each axle. Now I need 4 trim spacers. They are 1 3/8” X 5/8” X 3/8” with a 7/32” hole and a 45° cut on one end. Now I need to make four wheel trims. On the plan there are 9 dimensions and 2 diameters and I could do the layout. But these are full size plans...

Tool thoughts #7: Lumber Rack

93 days ago by NedB | 3 comments »

Looted my storage unit today. I had this pile of wood in there… plus just a bit more ‘shorts’ and ‘cutoffs’ but they’ll come home tomorrow. I had to clear out the rack just above the mitersaw, so I put up a couple more arms on the wall and moved the short stock over there. I won’t need to buy too much wood for awhile.. who am I kidding anyway? Mostly cherry, (middle section), plus some maple and butternut (bottom and top sections) ...

Kitchen Cabinets #1: Kitchen cabinet doors

99 days ago by Dan Lyke | 3 comments »

I debated whether I should put this entry here or over at HomeRefurbers, but that site really hasn’t taken off yet, and the process of coming up with our kitchen cabinets is feeling a whole lot more like woodworking than it is home improvement. Although an upgrade from the 1 person 1947 kitchen will certainly be an improvement. My arm was good enough this weekend to play in the shop again. My main project was to mock up a prototype to some lightweight appliance lift ideas I̵...

Album Art #2

148 days ago by Anthrax | 3 comments »

So far in this series I have finished two of the hopefully ten woodburned album covers. I take any ideas and use most of them. My next project will be a Dragonforce one and then an ACDC one. Hopefully I’ll be able to do more but I’m in a band and The Teenagewoodworker and I haven’t totally figured out when Wood Riffs will air or what we are gonna do. We might do some sort of guitar case Denny said he was gonna make me but anyway. I’ m open to any comments anyone has. ...

Workbench - Start to Finish #1: Design

149 days ago by beaudex | 3 comments »

I started woodworking in my early 20s (many year ago). Prior to this the only real exposure to woodworking I had was building remote controlled model aircroft out of balsa. I started by taking a year long rough carpentry course at a local community college. What does this have to do with workbenchs you wonder.. I believe a well designed workbench starts with your experience with workbenches. Thinking back I have had the oppourtunity to use a few workbenches and there are a few things I discov...

FWW Build Off '08 #4: Wine Rack Installment #4

223 days ago by RusticElements | 3 comments »

Well, the rough sanding on the outside is done down to 150 grit. I used a belt sander with medium grit to do the bulk of it then an RO palm sander for the 150. The belt sander is an absolute no no if working on a cedar canoe but on the maple it worked great. There’s always a few gaps between the planks that have to be filled. I mixed up some filler using white wood glue (dries clear) and maple sanding dust to use as filler. I used epoxy and sanding dust when building the canoe and th...
