After admiring the double and double-double dovetail joints that are capable with the Incra and other jigs, I started thinking, “Why not try this by hand?” So this box is my first experiment with handcut double dovetails. It took me some time to figure out the joinery process, but once I realized a few things about this type of joint, it seemed do-able. It was quite challenging but also a ton of fun. It also does take some degree of patience and precision…which I’m still working on.
In...

Yes. Finally some light at the end of the tunnel, reverse thinking, and this project seems a bit more doable, and even not much trouble at all.
Originally I tried to get the (2.5” hardened) nails out by using a cat’s paw and a hammer to pull each nail out of the 2.5 laminated hard-rock maple strips. I figured once I get all the nails out of the top strip, it’ll just free it from the lamination, and be nails free… one strip at a time, until I have them all cleared ou...

A month and 1/2 ago I posted Preface to my Wood Gloat where I blogged about some maple wood that I got from a sawmill in Delaware.
I showed these logs that I saw in the sawmill back in Feb 2007.
I asked the sawmill owner to cut of those logs for me. He said no he was going to keep them.
Well today I got a phone call from the sawmill owner. He stated that he has closed the mill down and was going to go back to working masonry. I think that the economy and the lack of getting l...

Exciting Progress..
I am making some great progress on my closet project. I currently have the copper rods in a machine shop where the parts are being fabricated.
The clients and I had talked about changing the lights to better illuminate the fine work that I have produced. While the metal work is being done I decided to go ahead and install the new lights.
WOW!
Man-OH-Man! Does it ever look fantastic!
Here is the closet with the old lights:

Last thursday I stopped by the local Sawmill. I wasn’t looking for anything, just a social visit. I think that he’s running into finincial problems. The reason I say that is the lack of logs in the lot and the lack of piles of sawn wood in the yard.
He is not usually at the mill in the recent times I’ve visited. But, he was there this day. He shut down the mill and came over to talk. We chatted for a few minutes and then he asked if I wanted to buy that pile of maple over...

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

From the Workbench of T-Chisel
Well the boiled linseed oil has been applied and allowed to cure. This next video introduces you to my finish guy, Mark Libby. Mark has 25 years experience in the finishing industry. Mark begins finishing this Slant Top Tiger Maple Desk by gently sanding and then begins to build up finish with layers of shellac (70:30 mix) with an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) sprayer. Stay tuned for the next video in the series when we apply the final coats of finish, a...

Damian posted a blog and was asking about dimensioning a board that was bowed.
When I read his title I thought he might be asking my question. It wasn’t so I’m going to ask it here.
When I buy wood at the sawmill I usually get 5/4 stock so that when it dries it’s still a little over 1” thick and can be planed to a great board. Sometimes the wood is 1 3/8 to 1 1/2” thick. Should all of this wood be planed to 13/16 or so. Or is it desirable to keep them thick...

Finished!
Well it’s been a long journey and it did not end without one extra push.
I finished installing the copper handles Monday by 11:30. There was a couple of scratches but I was certain I could buff them out. This is a skill that goes with the territory. I worked on the finish for the next six hours and I could not get the finish to blend.
How to Remove a Scratch-
After exhausting all other options this is what I resorted to today:
Yes you are seeing it correctly...

A friend of mine has a cabinet shop with a spray booth and was nice enough to let me play in it. These photos were all taken in his shop.
Here is one of the samples we tried on a test piece. This is aniline die dissolved in alcohol.
WOW, I really like the color!
We used his Festool sander for the final sanding.
I had to stir the dye for over an hour.
On goes the die:
Sanding in between coats of sanding sealer and lacquer:
Er...
