Just playing around in the shop and came accross these planes. I made them a couple years ago, and really enjoyed it.
Nothing too fancy, and the basic plans came from a book on making hand planes.
They are a pleasure to use as the shavings come peeling through the throat opening. That nice whoosh sound that only planes make, and shavings thin enough to read through!
And a polished surface that’s left behind. So much satisfaction in using them, knowing you made them.

I’ve had a fun week. I’m building a chair to match the Tilt Front Desk that I previously posted, and blogged about. If you want to read about the desk, the posting link is given at the bottom of this blog.
The desk chair is designed to fit the customer’s kitchen, as the desk is being placed in the kitchen area. She loves to cook, and hopes to move her laptop computer station to the kitchen where she can capture her thoughts on her cooking blog, and do more writing.

Finally got to the point where I could try the waterslide transfer decals out.
David’s instructions were much clearer than what came with the product.
Having already used a different first coat, than in his demo (oops), and not being sure of compatability issues (not to mention wanting to wait for a few coats of spray finish to dry) I tried using them unprotected (as per the manufacturers instructions).
They worked great – slid off perfectly. I didn’t find them too ...

I awoke this morning to a dreary, cold, very foggy day.
I don’t mind fog, my morning commute to work is only about 40 feet behind the house, and a little fog doesn’t slow me down much walking out there. Actually, it is mornings like this that I’m reminded how much I have to be thankful for. Back in the days when I had to commute by car 87 miles to Wichita, a foggy morning like this one was a real burden, even treacherous.

This is a knife I made almost 60 years ago. _Bob, reminded me of this in his metal working blog. I told Bob I’d get a picture of it, But the knife now lives with my oldest Son down in AR. He kindly sent me some pictures.
Our high school offered an General metals course, in 10th grade. The first 1/3 of the year we learned how to weld, both Gas, & Electric arc. The next 1/3 we did blacksmithing, & forging. The last 1/3 we did pattern making, & casting aluminum.

I picked up a bag-o-blanks from Woodcraft, 32 assorted exotic and domestic species. I was about to get a sample box, or a few small pieces and cut my own blanks, but decided that this would give me the best variety bang for the buck, and help me begin to understand wood identification. A picture is good for some, but to actually see, hold and compare is much better.
I set these out so I could figure out which I’d be making cigar pens out of, and which would become Euro-style ones ...

I have one more apron to cut out on the scroll saw. So tedious, hard for me to sit for long and use the saw. Few minutes at a time. Still I got lucky again. I was going out to visit my Mom’s grave today and right across from the cemetary along side the road was a hugh red oak that had just been dropped. I stopped talked with Mom for a minute then took off for city hall a the DPW. My cousin works for the town DPW and he was there working on something on the work bench. I asked him where...
