So I got my jointer blades back from the sharpener, Standard Saw Works, and they did a great job. It’s a cool store too and one of the storefront window displays is full of old wooden planes (I didn’t get a pic)
Once I got the blades back to the workshop I set about reinstalling them. My usual method is to use my dial indicator and twiddle with them for hours on end getting them just right but this time I tried a new approach which worked really well.

I am making a small box for a very special friend to put some of the ashes from her recenltly deceased husband. She really likes the keepsake box that i am posting a picture of here:
I want to make the top so it is somewhat secure ( not locked ) but because it is such a small box (7×5 x 3)I would prefer not to put a bunch of hardware on it. I thought about a couple of small button magnets mortised into the inside edge of the box to hold the top shut and it would put a “fair&...

I find handy uses for rare earth magnets all over my shop. I just thought I would share this as a tip. Here are some of the places I use them:
My table saw fence has a magnet embedded in the plywood top I made and it keeps a ruler handy:
These magnets keeps blades and an alen wrench handy on my scroll saw base:
A wrench for my jointer and a push block are magneted to the jointer base:

I found myself in the midst of a woodworking catch-22 today, at least for a while, until a low level epiphany saved the day for me. I’m pretty new here and haven’t tried blogging yet so this gives me a good excuse to try it out. First, I’ll give my favorite definition of a catch-22 situation – one that fits my experience today to a ‘T’. “A catch-22 is a situation wherein the solution to a problem is impossible given the very nature of the problem.”

The last step in the process is to install the magnets. If you’ve followed this blog you may recall how I messed this up in the first Weather Station.
