I have completed preliminary stages of machining a custom helical cutterhead for my DeWalt 733 Planer. The design is what I came up with from looking at other companies’ designs. This is what I created in my CAD software. Here is a video of the machining process to this point… DON’T WORRY, THERE’S MORE TO COME! This video is over 16 Minutes, but I think you’ll enjoy it. Templates and Jigs Whenever we do a project that has the potential to be built again, or if the design is somewhat difficult, we’ll spend the time to build a jig. This is a process that pays back big dividends, and has been practiced for hundreds of years. In the first instance, it makes sense to speed up the process of duplicating it. This prevents you from having to record all the dimensions and engineering that went into the piece. A very big time saver. In the second ...
(don’t miss the video at the bottom!) I’m currently building a rack for lumber shorts and cutoffs under 3’ in length. I wanted to do a bit more than slap together Home Depot plywood and solids this time, though. One small ‘extra’ will be exposed pegs through the sidewalls to help support the thin ply shelves (they’re also getting #0 biscuits – I like overkill). These pegs will be flush-sawn, sanded, and finished with the rest of the rack, and most ...
IT’S DONE!!!!!!!! I am editing the final video of the machining process…. I have completed final stages of machining a custom helical cutterhead for my DeWalt 733 Planer. The design is what I came up with from looking at other companies’ designs. BIG THANKS TO BYRD TOOL AND HERMANCE TOOL for the inspiration and great ideas. THANKS ALSO TO Dave at www.conicaltool.com for the custom tapered end mills used to machine the pockets for the carbide teeth, and for having the te...
Well, it’s installed in the planer. Watch the videos below to see how things turned out. I still haven’t finished editing the machining video, but I’ll get to it. See my first Topic SHELIX CUTTERHEADand Part I and Part II of this blog entry Here I begin inserting the teeth.......and here I finish. I didn’t want to bore you with watching me insert every tooth....Here is the first time I actually power up the planer. Pretty intimidating, if you ask me. I was r...
Yes I know, I posted the beads box as a complete project: But since I didn’t hear no fat lady sing I have not yet come to a halt. Now is the fun part – the small add ons. First on the list was the wire drawer, or the strings drawer. My plan was to house 2 rolls of wires in a drawer, and pass the wires through the draw front so that the wires can be pulled and cut to length without the need to open the drawer at all. I was also thinking about implementing a blade in the drawe...
In researching making my own hollowing tools I have come into one main problem. I am a wood worker and don’t have metal working tools (and no intention to). I have received a good amount feedback concerning the amount of heat I will need to get the rod in a malleable state. This is one my concerns, the other is drilling into the end of the rod.Today I went by several machine shops to see what the cost for bending and drilling the rods. I would tap the rods myself. None of them provide the ...
