Lumber Making #4: The Maple has Landed!

402 days ago by Dorje | 18 comments »

The remainder of the maple came down today and I got a shot of the main trunk section that I plan to mill. It’s definitely going to be spalted throughout. This bole is 35-40” in diameter and the arborist was able to leave it intact from base to crotch! It’s 11’ long. It’s partially cracked on the side you can’t see and does have some splitting, so it probably won’t yield wide boards. I think it is sound enough to go through with this venture. Th...

Lumber Making #3: Maple in the works...

405 days ago by Dorje | 22 comments »

Well, just some text at this point – but I can’t slow my heart rate down at the thought of what’s happening next door. A major maple – which looks like it may have some serious figure – is coming down. I’ve been offered the bole (the main trunk from the base to the crotch), which is about 10-12 feet long, and a couple sections of major limbs from the crotch up a ways. The arborist says he’ll need to cut the bole in two…I’d like it left ...

The Party is Growing: Joel Tille is coming, More Plans for the DeCou-site Lumberjock Picnic

480 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 26 comments »

I was out in the yard planting two little maple trees and the “wife” called from the house, “Phone call, come in the house, it’s Joel Tille from Iowa.” Now, normally, when I am a hundred yards from the house, covered in dirt and sweat and planting trees, and the root ball is laying on the ground rapidly drying out, I would just say, “take a message.” But, “wife” has learned a few things in 15 years of marriage, namely, because she told...

Outdoor "Coffee" Table #5: A little time'll get ya...

497 days ago by Dorje | 16 comments »

Be forewarned: What follows is not the most interesting content, but I’m just trying to document the steps of this process… I had an ounce of time yesterday afternoon (less than an hour) so I cut up the stock to rough dimensions. I was nervous about this after finding out just how hard Jatoba really is. Very hard wood. Wasn’t sure me little Crapsman (cast iron top contractors saw w/ belt driven 1hp motor) was gonna do the trick, but boy am I proud of it! The pieces w...

Holtzapffel Bench #2: A Lumber Jock Meets Lumber Jack

376 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 6 comments »

Last weekend I made my first trip to a local lumber yard for the Holtzapffel bench project. After much deliberation, I had made a firm decision on White Ash as my choice of wood. I’ve not been to many lumber yards, and I’ve never gone to pick out my own rough-cut slices before, so this was quite exciting for me. In my haste, I planned poorly for the hauling of big, heavy woods and had to rent a Home Depot truck for the duration. I drive a Mazda3 which, while Zoom-Zoom and util...

SAWMILL LOCATER: Find a Sawmill Near You

57 days ago by TreeBones | 3 comments »

I have been building a database of sawmills and put it together as a Sawmill Locater where you can search by state to find sawmills that provide custom cutting services and sell specialty lumber. Locate a mill near you or many will ship lumber if you find they have access to exotic or hard to find species you might be interested in. Please follow this link to search by state: http://westcoastlands.net/FindASawer.html

Lumber Purchase today.

89 days ago by Karson | 18 comments »

Those of you who know me know that I’m always on the lookout for wood (not). I’ve got more lumber than I’ll ever use in my lifetime. But I’ve been on the lookout for some Aromatic Red Cedar. I saw a log at an acquaintance home and I told him to cut it up. He owns a Woodmizer. I went to pick up the wood today. he also cut up a few other cedar logs at the same time so he probably had 1000 bd ft cut. I picked up 6 1X10 – 6’, 6 1X6- 8’, 6 1×...

Operation Holtzapffel #3: Lumber Acquired

272 days ago by Damian Penney | 9 comments »

Made another trip to PALS for the rest of the lumber, and seeing as my lumber rack isn’t wide enough most of it is on the floor or just propped up at the moment. Here’s all the 8/4 stock waiting to be butchered. I ran all my stock through Cutlist Plus and here’s what it came up with, not too much waste which is nice (and I’ll use whatever is left over eventually anyway) You can click the Cutlist Pic for a bigger view. Some parts are doubled up because I n...

My Canarywood purchase

301 days ago by GaryK | 15 comments »

Last week while I was in California I stopped by at a place I used to get wood.I was just going to look until I found this canarywood. All of the canarywood I haveseen before has been straight grain kinda plain looking. Here is 17bf I had shipped back home. $5.99 a BF. The flash washes out the color, and without the flash it’s dark. So I included both. It’s kind of hard to get a true sense of what it looks like in a picture but I think youwill get the idea. Almost all the col...
