I just finished editing my most recent video—this one featuring Boston-based furniture maker John Fox. I was fortunate to be able to capture this unique, inside look at his wood selection process. (5 Minute Video)

John Reed Fox: How a Master Artisan Selects Wood
In this video, I was able to film master furniture maker John Fox collaborate with fine-hardwood dealers, Rick and Brian Hearne, as he searches from among Hearne Hardwood’s 1,000,000 board feet of to...

I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet!
Inspired by Bob’s forum topic post the other day on the craigslist cherry crotchwood, I took some pics of some crotchwood I cut in April…
A couple p...

One day this workbench may be done.
It is made from construction lumber. 4×4s, 2×6s and 2×4s. Other than being a functional piece for my “shop”. I wanted this to be a learning process for joinery I have not attempted.
The size is about 4’x2’x35”. The small size has been depicted by my small space, the front portion of a 1 car garage. My one goal was to complete the structure of this workbench using no hardware, i.e., nails, screws, bo...

Last step in the process (well not the last – but close to it – still have to get back over there and paint, or otherwise seal the endgrain, which hasn’t done much in the way of checking with all the freezing temps and the moisture we’ve been getting)
...I set up a level ‘foundation’ for the lumber stack. Made sure it was up off the ground and spaced the beams just under 2ft apart:.........Here’s a couple shots of the progress. My wife helped me h...

I have been building a database of sawmills and put it together as a Sawmill Locater where you can search by state to find sawmills that provide custom cutting services and sell specialty lumber. Locate a mill near you or many will ship lumber if you find they have access to exotic or hard to find species you might be interested in. Please follow this link to search by state: http://portablesawmill.info

I was walking through the timber a month ago, and found a huge smooth bark hickory that had fallen from a storm.
The trunk was 24” in diameter at its base, and 30 foot up the trunk it was 16” in diameter.
When I saw it, I knew it just had to be milled. I already had a cherry that had fallen that was 20 foot tall and a foot in diameter. So, I called a sawyer that came and picked up one 6 foot and two 12 foot hickory logs, and one 5 foot and two 8 foot cherry logs. ...

Purging the Lumber Rack
Woodworkers naturally have the hoarding instinct and this must be kept in check with strict discipline. The lumber rack has been gathering leftover material and unique pieces of wood for years with little culling to insure the quality of the collection.
I cleared three small shelves first and gave a good stack of wood away to a local LumberJock member. He got a Porter Cable dovetail jig for Christmas and this will keep him busy with making boxes. I had the wood b...

On the same cold, crisp, gorgeous day in Sunny Seattle…the next thing we did was mount a 2×12x12 to the top of the 1st half of the maple log as a guide board to establish our first flat face from which we could continue to cut with just the chainsaw mill. The 2×12 had 2×2 runners screwed on to it to keep it flat and a wee bit more ridgid. One hooked over the edge, while the other was inset a few inches to “shim” the board to “level” it out (all ...

A few years ago, I like so many others, caught a little thing called “The Handtool Bug”. It is an insidious affliction causing one to examine their shop essentials and workflow, and to open one’s wallet far too frequently. I thought a I had a grasp on things until I read Christopher Schwartz’s book, “Workbenches: From Design & Theory to Construction & Use”. It was then that I realized how woefully inadequate my bench was for hand tool work. Afte...
