I just finished editing my most recent video—this one featuring Boston-based furniture maker John Fox. I was fortunate to be able to capture this unique, inside look at his wood selection process. (5 Minute Video)
Video Link Here:
John Reed Fox: How a Master Artisan Selects Wood
In this video, I was able to film master furniture maker John Fox collaborate with fine-hardwood dealers, Rick and Brian Hearne, as he searches from among Hearne Hardwood’s 1,000,000 board feet of to...

I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet!
Inspired by Bob’s forum topic post the other day on the craigslist cherry crotchwood, I took some pics of some crotchwood I cut in April…
A couple p...

I have been building a database of sawmills and put it together as a Sawmill Locater where you can search by state to find sawmills that provide custom cutting services and sell specialty lumber. Locate a mill near you or many will ship lumber if you find they have access to exotic or hard to find species you might be interested in. Please follow this link to search by state: http://portablesawmill.biz/concrete

A couple of years ago a 2 trunk white ash went over on our vacation property & lodged in the crotch of a dead & unstable white birch at about a 45deg angle. Being an amateur in the woods with a chainsaw, not a lumberjack, (you might want to go to youtube & search the lumberjack song for a laugh) I decided to wait until it broke out & fell to the ground instead of onto me. It did so over last winter, so a friend & I cut it into 12 foot logs – 8 foot is the minimum the...

It seems like everytime someone says that he has “extra” lumber, or “more than enough” people jump to say that there can never be too much, as someone said: “there is no such thing is just enough, and too much is just right”.
I came upon a shop that closed, and they were getting rid of their overstock lumber. I got too late for the 5/4 10’ pieces, but I did manage to get all their short stock (cut offs, leftovers):
It’s mostly Mahogany, Ch...

Last step in the process (well not the last – but close to it – still have to get back over there and paint, or otherwise seal the endgrain, which hasn’t done much in the way of checking with all the freezing temps and the moisture we’ve been getting)
...I set up a level ‘foundation’ for the lumber stack. Made sure it was up off the ground and spaced the beams just under 2ft apart:.........Here’s a couple shots of the progress. My wife helped me h...

On the same cold, crisp, gorgeous day in Sunny Seattle…the next thing we did was mount a 2×12x12 to the top of the 1st half of the maple log as a guide board to establish our first flat face from which we could continue to cut with just the chainsaw mill. The 2×12 had 2×2 runners screwed on to it to keep it flat and a wee bit more ridgid. One hooked over the edge, while the other was inset a few inches to “shim” the board to “level” it out (all ...

OK, so that’s how I like my steaks, but as for lumber – I really like it dry, and just right!
When I took on the Bowling Lane Workbench project, I knew I’d have to reorganize the work space a tad bit (ok, more than just that). Especially since I also got the planer which takes considerable space, I knew things would have to be moved around to give me room to walk/stand, and work comfortably and safely.
the new workbench now resides where my medium/longer (anything that...
