On the same cold, crisp, gorgeous day in Sunny Seattle…the next thing we did was mount a 2×12x12 to the top of the 1st half of the maple log as a guide board to establish our first flat face from which we could continue to cut with just the chainsaw mill. The 2×12 had 2×2 runners screwed on to it to keep it flat and a wee bit more ridgid. One hooked over the edge, while the other was inset a few inches to “shim” the board to “level” it out (all ...

I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet!
Inspired by Bob’s forum topic post the other day on the craigslist cherry crotchwood, I took some pics of some crotchwood I cut in April…
A couple p...

I took two days off work and drove back to my Grandpa’s this weekend in an effort to complete the de-construction of the house and salvage all of the Knotty Pine and Ash that I could.
I just got to town when I called Grandpa and he informed me that he decided to leave the house standing and use it as storage for the farm.
Crap – I wasted a weekend. Oh well, what ever he wants to do is fine with me. I guess Dad and I will go fishing instead – maybe not such a waste of a...

I decided today that I would offer some of the Knotty Pine and Ash up for sale to anyone on Lumber Jocks.
I am not doing this to make money, I am doing this because I hate to see it go up in smoke. If I have no takers by this weekend, I’ll get what I can and the remainder will probably be burnt down.
Cost? – Make an offer. Location – SE Kansas or Wichita, Kansas

Here are a few of the boards we have been able to salvage so far. This is probably 1/3 of the Knotty Pine that is there. I will probably get half this much again and then let the building be destroyed. I just simply do not know what to do with all of it, have no good place to store it, and quite frankly do not have the time to keep going back home every weekend to work on it.
Trailer is 18’ x 7’
Most are 8’ – 9’, some 4’, some 12’, and some ...

Made another trip to PALS for the rest of the lumber, and seeing as my lumber rack isn’t wide enough most of it is on the floor or just propped up at the moment. Here’s all the 8/4 stock waiting to be butchered.
I ran all my stock through Cutlist Plus and here’s what it came up with, not too much waste which is nice (and I’ll use whatever is left over eventually anyway)
You can click the Cutlist Pic for a bigger view. Some parts are doubled up because I n...

Last week while I was in California I stopped by at a place I used to get wood.I was just going to look until I found this canarywood. All of the canarywood I haveseen before has been straight grain kinda plain looking.
Here is 17bf I had shipped back home. $5.99 a BF.
The flash washes out the color, and without the flash it’s dark. So I included both. It’s kind of hard to get a true sense of what it looks like in a picture but I think youwill get the idea. Almost all the col...

One of the hardest things about building anything here is finding nice wood. It seems that if you want anything better than standard construction lumber, you’re up the creek. That’s bizarre in a country that does so much logging and has so much nice exotic wood (I guess it’s mostly exported).
At least for a bench, standard construction lumber is just fine. Since I’ll be using 2×6s for my legs, I needed something that would match it in thickness (I’ll be tenoning the legs up into the be...

I received an email and as I clicked through some of the information. I ran across this page. It’s for a Catskill Woodnet
They are pushing sustainable forest sawmills and artisans. You can see who the members are to purchase lumber etc and also sign up for e-newsletters.
