I didn’t want to waste any time slabbing up some of the minilogs I cut out of the mystery branches I found last week, so Saturday I had a go at it. Very exciting. I had some split pieces, so I sanded them up on my belt sander.
I like the faint grain revealed in the piece on the left, sanded down from one like that which I’m holding:

I’ve been a casual, beginner-level woodworker since learning some basics in high school shop class, but now I find myself living on a farm with a small orchard of about 3 dozen walnut trees. A tree expert (easy to find those here in Oregon) told me they’re English walnut grafted onto Black walnut rootstock and were probably planted in the 1930’s.

Hello and thanks for all the welcoming. I’m new to this site. I have not posted any thing but it won’t be long. Right now I am in the process of building a sawmill and I’m almost done. I live in a heavily wooded area and after hurricane Ike we had a lot of trees down. Also people around here are clearing their lots to build new homes so that is what prompted me to build a sawmill. I have always cut my green logs either on the ground or on top of other logs. Well a few weeks ago I was cutting a log and it decided it wanted to dance a little bit. Now I don’t care if a log dances or not I just don’t want it to move while I have a moving 20” chainsaw in it.
This got me thinking there has to be a way to hold the work safely for cutting. So I took to the internet looking for sawhorses for chainsaws. I did find a few commercial units but they were all listed in E...

I’ve done some smaller things in Jacaranda lately, but what does the larger stuff look like inside? I wanted to do some larger bowl work and other things, so I went to one my larger limbs and cut it into some pieces. They’re simple, but pretty inside, so I thought I’d share. It’s not very common a wood for most woodworkers, I think.

I promise not to start posting every log I resaw (lest my blog becoming nothing but!), but I think folks interested in resawing, or copying the jig I just made might like to see some more samples.

I got the last 2 of the 5 sections built last week, sans the corrugated roofing. Here’s how I did it, at warp speed:

This is a bit old now, as I built these starting in late March this year, but I’m expanding them a bit now, and wanted to post some updates on that. That requires getting off my butt and posting the original stuff I’ve dragged my heels on.
