random #7: The tiniest woodshop - resawing miniboards

262 days ago by Gary Fixler | 17 comments »

I didn’t want to waste any time slabbing up some of the minilogs I cut out of the mystery branches I found last week, so Saturday I had a go at it. Very exciting. I had some split pieces, so I sanded them up on my belt sander. I like the faint grain revealed in the piece on the left, sanded down from one like that which I’m holding: I clamped my belt sander down to the table to use it as a mini (though relatively enormous) benchtop model: Here’s a long piece sanded ...

busy, Busy, BUSY!!!

385 days ago by SteveKorz | 30 comments »

Well, I’ve been wood and LumberJocks deprived for the last month or two. I’ve been in the shop for hours a day, but it’s not been my own (which has been kind of weird, messing with someone else’s tools). I’ve owned this old tractor for about a decade. It’s a 1955 International Harvester Farmall 200. My Father and Grandfather owned it before me. It’s been in our family for about 50 years or so. My Grandfather farmed with it, and we’ve use...

SAWMILL LOCATER: Find a Sawmill Near You

417 days ago by TreeBones | 5 comments »

I have been building a database of sawmills and put it together as a Sawmill Locater where you can search by state to find sawmills that provide custom cutting services and sell specialty lumber. Locate a mill near you or many will ship lumber if you find they have access to exotic or hard to find species you might be interested in. Please follow this link to search by state: http://portablesawmill.biz/concrete

SAW BUCKS: TAKING THE BULL BY THE HORNS

417 days ago by TreeBones | 2 comments »

SAW BUCKS: TAKING THE BULL BY THE HORNS The First and Only Sawmill Forum to Put Sawyers in the Drivers Seat At last there’s a new forum out there that’s geared up for sawmill operators and it looks like “Saw Bucks” is just what the doctor ordered. Focused on sawmills and all aspects of the trade, Sawyers take the lead instead of being a secondary topic section like other sites where milling is not the main stream content but just a spin off. After seeing how each section add...

Working mature wood, and maturing the woodworker

508 days ago by Mark | 10 comments »

1965 – 2003 I’ve been a casual, beginner-level woodworker since learning some basics in high school shop class, but now I find myself living on a farm with a small orchard of about 3 dozen walnut trees. A tree expert (easy to find those here in Oregon) told me they’re English walnut grafted onto Black walnut rootstock and were probably planted in the 1930’s. So, Lumberjock buddies, can any of you tell me whether the trunks of these trees are Black walnut or ...

Woo Hoo, Part Deux #1: Streetside Maple Log Quarters become bowl blanks

748 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 14 comments »

Continued from a previous post Scoooore! Maple quarter log sections/bowl blanks. Nice fall day. Scraped windows and removed old glazing. With the Honeydew list project out of the way, it’s on to fun! The original logs were big enough that I was able to get two natural edge face grain blanks and five end grain blanks, none with pith to contend with. And I got some nice wedges for future chainsawing, and likely some pen blanks, as well. I’ll keep a photoblog as these bowls unfol...

"Slabbin' at Wood" #8: "Wood Ballet Dancing in the FreeHand" --by RusticWoodArt

772 days ago by frank | 4 comments »

Wood Ballet Dancing in the FreeHand And so it’s time, time to get back on track here and answer some questions, plus try to give an understanding to any and all that want to try this type of slabbin’ at wood. One of the issuing egresses that make my projects so long, is the time and effort I take in the planning of the project from start to finish. I really do try and make use of telling the truth, that when I say ‘hand made’ the ‘wood art’ that I co...

Going from Horizontal to Vertical in Freehand ....so here we go again, best grab your safety glasses, mickey mouse ears and put your chaps on, as we journey outside into the wonder-full world of workin’ with wood…. Safety is: 1) eye protection2) ear protection3) leg and groin protection....and….if we were entering the woods to take some trees down…. 4) head protection! Safety is; having a good mental disposition….or right mindset! Safety is unde...
