Softball Bat #2: The Bats are Done

320 days ago by cheller | 8 comments »

At class Thursday night I finished both of the softball bats. First step was to burnish the bats using a dog’s chew bone (without the meaty center :-) ). This was done with the bats loaded into the lathe, but with the lathe off. With that completed it was time to coat the bats with oil (natural Danish oil). This was done with the lathe spinning at the slowest speed. And finally the bats were shined using handfuls of shavings (courtesy of the dust collection system). With the...

How not to #1: Turn a Bowl

325 days ago by scottb | 12 comments »

The first in a, likely, long educational series, teaching by example. Poor example. Deliberately. If we don’t try (and fail quick) we may never learn how to proceed. Or reasons why the tried and true, really is. Several months back (or more) I saw some experimental turnings of Hilary Pfeifer's made from several layers of perforated hardboard, laminated into a block with woodglue. Inspired (and knowing that common wood glue would be brutal to keeping your chisels sharp) I took a bunch...

Softball Bat #1: New Tool Skills

326 days ago by cheller | 2 comments »

Up until this summer I had never used a lathe, and that was okay. I’ve been able to do what I wanted without it. Then last spring the guys in the adult ed class I take, including the instructor, got interested in making baseball bats. I don’t know what started it but soon fully half the class was working on creating bats. At the time I was busy with other things. I spent most of the summer session working on other projects, primarily an advent calendar for my nephew. With ...

I will soon be able to again make shavings and I just got my bandsaw fixed

337 days ago by jockmike2 | 7 comments »

A couple reasons I haven’t been able to make anything lately, aside from being short on blood, is two of my important tools took a dump on me. Actually three, but we won’t talk about that. Luckily one was under contract with sears and they honored it gracefully, my band saw, and 2. I must have the luck of the Irish because my Delta 46-765X, 16 inch variable speed lathe died on me, or at least the control module did. The module is no longer manufactured or in stock by Delta or Port...

Dear Santa

341 days ago by scottb | 12 comments »

So my wife is letting me ask Santa for a mini/midi lathe this Christmas! I get to graduate from the less than perfect setup (but great capacity) of my shopsmith. I’ve started scouting for deals, but I’ll still have to wait for my new toy no matter when it arrives. ;( After several magazine articles over the past several months or so, I’ve had my eye on the 10x14 Jet, and the slightly greater capacity 12x16 Rikon. Should I keep debating, variable speed capability vs cap...

MsDebbieP's Company Tours #3: Lee Valley, Part II

392 days ago by MsDebbieP | 23 comments »

(continued from Lee Valley Interview, part I) Following my interview with Robin Lee, President of Lee Valley, I took my Canadian Film Crew with me as I headed to my “local” Lee Valley Store, which is just an hour away, for my very first public appearance as MsDebbieP, the Canadian LumberJock. The weather was the hottest that we’ve had all summer and, boy oh boy, was the hat and coat ever hot! Inside, Don Riley, the store manager, gave me a tour, starting with the warehouse area i...

3rd Update on the Hymn Number Stand

396 days ago by Mark DeCou | 9 comments »

I had a nice weekend. Saturday I worked with a local cabinet maker helping him catch up on his schedule. We are nearly finished with the 3rd kitchen cabinet job, and then he will be caught up. I think I have worked about 8-9 days this summer with him on Saturdays. Sunday was relaxing, went to church and then home with the family, and a nap. A nap makes a lot of things better for some reason (not to take anything away from church). Today, Monday, I have the Hymn Number Board just abo...

wood joinery / garden contest entry #3: more turning in one day...

396 days ago by scottb | 7 comments »

To date, the most time I’ve spent at the lathe was 3 hours – and that was in a small classroom setting practing beads and coves – 1/2 the time playing and getting a feel for the tools, and the rest of the time trying to make deliberate shapes – while contantly dealing with catches. Today, I began working on my wood joinery/garden project. 1 hour of planning and cutting, 4 hours straight at the lathe! Also to date, the longest things I’ve turned came in around ...

2nd Update on the Church Hymn Number Board Commission Project

402 days ago by Mark DeCou | 11 comments »

Today, Monday, I took photos of what I have accomplished on my Hymn Number Board that I am building for the St. Anthony Church in Strong City, KS. On one hand, it seems like I made a lot of progress since my last blog late last week, but when I look back over the photos tonight, I can see that the number of hours it takes me to do this tedious work is mounting. I started the project with the previous blog: http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/decoustudio/blog/1508 Also, since I had enough in...
