I was told that it looks like a funeral urn, but that’s ok, since I didn’t have a plan when I started. hopefully these picture links will work…
I spent the day in the shop, turning the legs for the game table, cleaning up and getting ready for Monday.
Hey Everybody, Well, here it is Christmas time, and if you are like me, you are contemplating a special Christmas gift. This year I decided to make a Game Table and this first video will deal with fabricating the table legs. The inspiration for the legs comes from Federal style furniture, the detail that caught my eye is an embellishment at the foot of the leg. I found it was not as easy to duplicate as I had thought and it, became necessary to improvise. A couple of jigs solved the d...
Found this very funny and tasty video on U-tube. Shows a guy making string potatoes with his lathe! Then he cooks them and eats them….. I have to go, I am getting hungry… Link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XMBbYM11I8
These are a bit small for individual blogs so I am throwing these together. 1) maple pepper mill2) skinner knife – snakewood This is my first time making a knife. I may have made the scales a bit small. If I don’t like them, then I will have to move from snakewood to some maple burl. I will have to make the leather case for this too. I want to by a Beall buff for these 2 but so far the “why don’t we save money by you making the Christmas gifts this yearR...
When dad gave me his shop he had some particle board that had a funky patinaed copper veneer. He thought that it would make a neat clock but never got to it. I decided to try making that clock for him. The particle board is 7/8” thick so I needed to go rather thick on the frame. Found some 2x poplar and glued up an eight sided frame. Cut it round on the bandsaw and then mounted to the lathe (I glued a 3/4” plywood back during the glue-up). When I am done, I will part the fra...
Journal entry 11/9/2009 Working with MadroneBowl turned by David Gould from NY Proper handling and stabilizing of Madrone Madrone in a very self-destructive wood. I will crack and twist on you in a matter of hours even minutes sometimes. But don’t let that scare you. It is a beautiful wood to turn on a lathe or what ever the application. What you ask of the supplier: First of all make sure that you request sealing of all sides of the burl and not a thin coat. It has to be thic...
The workbench twoI complete the turning of the legs for the workbench and compare minor differences that occurred while turning. While the differences are not obvious to the casual observer and don’t affect the overall project I can’t help but to critique my work. This critiquing is an important step in my learning process. Being self taught for the most part, many times in the past the first step in a project was to just do it, then analyzing what went wrong or right. Having chosen to ...
I just cut into some more Black walnut. The 2 pieces are 14 1/2×32 x 4I keep getting impressed by our creator!
Hey everyone, Well it was just about a year ago that I started on this project, eventually I entered it in the Winter lumberjocks contest, some may remember it,it even got a few votes. While I was constructing the workbench I was shooting video and have about nine hours of video. This is the first of a series of nine.I also have a website That I will be posting future episodes to, as well as here at lumberjocks. Prior to starting the bench I checked out the www. to see what kind of videos...
