Up until this summer I had never used a lathe, and that was okay. I’ve been able to do what I wanted without it. Then last spring the guys in the adult ed class I take, including the instructor, got interested in making baseball bats. I don’t know what started it but soon fully half the class was working on creating bats. At the time I was busy with other things.

A couple reasons I haven’t been able to make anything lately, aside from being short on blood, is two of my important tools took a dump on me. Actually three, but we won’t talk about that. Luckily one was under contract with sears and they honored it gracefully, my band saw, and 2. I must have the luck of the Irish because my Delta 46-765X, 16 inch variable speed lathe died on me, or at least the control module did. So my wife is letting me ask Santa for a mini/midi lathe this Christmas! I get to graduate from the less than perfect setup (but great capacity) of my shopsmith. I’ve started scouting for deals, but I’ll still have to wait for my new toy no matter when it arrives. ;(
After several magazine articles over the past several months or so, I’ve had my eye on the 10x14 Jet, and the slightly greater capacity 12x16 Rikon.

I had a nice weekend. Saturday I worked with a local cabinet maker helping him catch up on his schedule. We are nearly finished with the 3rd kitchen cabinet job, and then he will be caught up. I think I have worked about 8-9 days this summer with him on Saturdays.
Sunday was relaxing, went to church and then home with the family, and a nap. A nap makes a lot of things better for some reason (not to take anything away from church).

To date, the most time I’ve spent at the lathe was 3 hours – and that was in a small classroom setting practing beads and coves – 1/2 the time playing and getting a feel for the tools, and the rest of the time trying to make deliberate shapes – while contantly dealing with catches.
Today, I began working on my wood joinery/garden project. 1 hour of planning and cutting, 4 hours straight at the lathe! Also to date, the longest things I’ve turned came in around ...

Today, Monday, I took photos of what I have accomplished on my Hymn Number Board that I am building for the St. Anthony Church in Strong City, KS.
On one hand, it seems like I made a lot of progress since my last blog late last week, but when I look back over the photos tonight, I can see that the number of hours it takes me to do this tedious work is mounting.

In this part I’m intending to finish the cigar pen I started last time. I’m going to add a bloodwood accent to the writing end of the pen.
To do this I took a bloodwood scrap and drilled the center. I then took a spare brass tube put it on the pen mill and squared one end to the hole. This allows the part to mate seamlessly to the piece on the tube.

Hello everyone! I wanted to share another item that I have been turning on my lathe. How many times have you are your significant other opened up the stove to check that roast or turkey baisting in the oven, only to be met by a burst of 475 degree heat in the face. Not fun, is it? Well, this is my solution to that problem.
