About time to move on to something else but first I have to finish the other two arches. I used the form and top arch to shape the bottom arch and just the top arch for the cap arch which is made out of jatoba. The other two are maple. I used Titebond III on the maple arches and barely had enough working time. I used Titebond Plastic Resin glue on the jatoba. It foamed up a lot and had plenty of open time, but it is expensive. Next time around I think I’ll try my hand at mixing up...

So after building the giant forms I’m finally ready for the first glue lamination. Since this arch section is made out of 8/4 maple I decided to resaw on the tablesaw. I used a thin kerf blade and set a Grip-Tite about 1/4” opposite the fence as a stop. I’ve turned the saw 180 degrees in the shop so I can keep the jointer out and have better (central) access to the dust collector. So far it is working great. This project is a fine example of the 80/20 concept. it takes 20% of the project time to complete 80% of it, and then, 80% of the project time to finish the last 20% of the project.
As it gets to the details, things take longer to think through, plan out, cut…mill…glue… and finesse. this time it’s the leg vise Chop, and although not completely finished (still need to trim, round off, and apply BLO), it’s construction is done.

Finally I have the first set of arches glued and clamped in the bending form. I have only made the arches for the hall table so far. Once I finish it I will go back and do the coffee table.
Since I only made one form for each shape I did it in two stages. I glued the first two arches yesterday and just got the identical (“opposing”) set in the forms tonight.

Okay, here’s my best shot. I tried to use “sketch up,” but I figured that, combined with tax time (I’m a CPA) the frustration was too much. I hand-drew my idea from a sketch I made during singing practice a few weeks ago, while listening to the Basses and Baritones (or, if you want an inside joke, the Third and Fourth Tenors) screw up their parts while the director tore out what little hair he has left. Of course, I did this while watching some weird Sherlock Holmes...

We should be paddling these next weekend at Lime Rock . My brother is going to be racing over the weekend in his Peyote MKII in the Rolex Vintage Festival. It should be a great time.
Here are the finished paddles….actually I still need to varnish them but they shouldn’t change much. The one on the right is the 2nd one. Much lighter than the 1st and likely to be the one my brother chooses.
Blade fronts…I really like #2…I hope it performs well with the rolled edge....

I completed the other paddle this weekend. Both are all done exept for the finishing. I’ve decided against doing any fiberglassing. I’m planning on using the West Systems epoxy with the 207 hardener and then 3 coats of Epifanes varnish. I’m going to wait for the warmer drier weather later in the week. I’ve noticed big differences in the epoxy finish depending on the weather.

I started #2 today. This one I’m shooting for better performance. I’m only using five 1/4” laminations this time instead of six and only one is mahogany instead of two. No lyptus in the handle this time either. The difference in weight is very noticable already.

A couple of pictures of glueing up the edges from last night and then todays lunch break. I didn’t even eat I want to finish this so bad.

My older brother loves water sports. Lately he has taken up SUP (standup paddleboarding) because it is easier on old geezers like himself. I say that with the greatest respect….I hope I can be half as active as he is when I’m 60+. It is basically a very large surf board with a paddle and (you gueesed it) you stand up the whole time.
