I have been looking at getting a router plane for some time now. Ebay has great deals, but if you know me you know I like making my own tools. In this video I make my own router plane using a piece of oak pallet, a thumbscrew, wing nut, and an old cheap hex wrench. I opted out of installing handles on this (like most do that are this version) because i liked the feel. I could use my hole hand instead of holding onto some knobs. Hope you enjoy and view the video HERE!

I like to turn the knobs on the cases I build. Dr. White’s chest has a total of twelve knobs. I’m not a skilled turner, but that hasn’t stopped me from building a lot of furniture with turned parts. Turning a batch of knobs that is “identical” could drive a turner to another hobby. However, it’s not too difficult to turn out a batch that matches “close enough.” Remember, this is a handmade project and hand-turned knobs scream craftsmanship. Watch this video to see how I turn out the kno...
After I posted the Zebrawood tote and knob set project on LumberJocks, bigike (of LJs) sent me a message asking me if I’d like to be the first to turn some Acrylic plane knobs. He said he had a source for acrylic stock. I told him sure – not wanting to pass up a chance to expand my lathe skills and at the same time turn some unique plane knobs for Ike and myself. He said he’d mail me some, and I sent him my address. Sure enough, a few weeks later, I received a big box of...
Jack and Jill, Went up the hill.To fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down,And broke his crown,And Jill came tumbling after. Then up Jack got,and home did trot.To old dame dob,Who fixed his KNOB,With vinegar and brown paper. What does this have to do with a machinist toolbox? well. I also had to fix my knobs, but not with vinegar and not with brown paper (although the walnut IS indeed brown)... read on: I wasn’t feeling too well today so I probably should not have done much wo...
Hello Friends! I am finally back from Iraq (back to Germany with my family that is) and have started the process of making new Totes and Knobs for my Bailey collection for my #3,#4,#5.#6, and #7. I posted earlier about my “Deployment Gift” purchase http://lumberjocks.com/topics/18574 that included new Hock Blades. I was able to print out LeeValley’s Tote diagram and successfully rough new Totes for my entire Bailey collection. Tomorrow I will turn the front Knobs and hopefu...
Hello, my name is TD and I’m a planeaholic. There I said it, they say that admitting you have a problem is the biggest step. Whew! Now I can get to the good stuff. Lets take a look at where it all began I was walking through a local junk store just minding my own business when my eyes were drawn to a collection of rusty metal items assembled in what looked to be the shape of a plane (I had seen planes before here on Lumberjocks but had never encountered one in the wild). I had ...
