Craftsman Bungalow Restoration #15: Summer 07 --- Kitchen and Den Weeks 3 -5

397 days ago by gizmodyne | 6 comments »

Slow DownThings actually slowed down a lot during these weeks from our perspective, as the amount of work in the kitchen apperaed to be moving slowly. Plaster work and sanding are not exactly exciting. Lots of sanding. We spent time running around buying tile and so on. We went shopping….Our new (old) stove. It is tiny. One of the guys that they sent did a terrible job preparing the wood in the porch so when they stained there were evil sanding marks from the palm sander in many s...

this artisan house #1: artisan household

608 days ago by scottb | 3 comments »

Back in my lumberjocks interview, I mentioned one of my lifelong goals was to fill the house with useful items made by myself, as well as other artists and artisans. (while paring down all the cheaply made, hand-me-down, and mass manufactured items) Here’s a quick first look at how things have been shaping up over the past several years. My wifes cousin, Tim made these pottery bowls as a wedding gift, even stamped them with his own chop (signature) before firing and glazing. T...

Transforming a Kitchen Cookbook Nook

235 days ago by Mark DeCou | 15 comments »

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood. They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

Where’s my Camera Cord?I lost my camera cord about a week ago so I haven’t been able to post photos recently. So some catch up with pics… (Borrowed my sister’s cord). Kitchen…. Cabinets anyone? If you followed the cabinet making journey you have witnessed some of the madness behind our method. And this week I got to install them finally. The kitchen is stained and painted now… I stained the cabinets and trim then finished with dewaxed shellac and thre...

398 days ago by gizmodyne | 3 comments »

SummaryThere was a lot going on in the days after the demolition. I worked on staining the guest room and millwork repairs to the kitchen. I oversaw the coordination of the electrical after the plumber left. The guys worked on stripping and sanding and more stripping. Here we go…. In the kitchenA shot of the area where the fridge had been. The vent indicates that this was a California Cooler. Predating fridges the were used to keep food cool. A hole in the floor let cool air from the...

Cabinet Progress #9: Catching some Z's

474 days ago by gizmodyne | 9 comments »

I Feel Boxed In So without Kristin I headed to the shop. Big mistake.. I need to be double checked. Mistake 1: Above you can see that I cut the dovetails on the front of the drawers. Dovetails go on sides! Duh…. Now they are decorative box joints. I will pin for extra strength. Mistake 2: I did not chuck the bit tight. It slipped while cutting the dado for the drawer bottom. Here you can see the hole. I enlarged it for repair. (More on that later) A view of the d...

Cabinet Progress #8: The fir was flying.

488 days ago by gizmodyne | 24 comments »

Building BoxesWe started to get stressed about completing both cabinets in the next two weeks in time for the first annual wood competition at our school. So we made the decision to complete one cabinet. Today we started to build the drawers. Our drawers will be dovetailed in the front and dadoed in the back. They will receive another nicer drawer front. Step One. Cutting out the knots. Step Two. Resawing. We were able to get two 1/2” thick pieces out of each board. Step Thre...

Cabinet Progress #6: Groovin on a Saturday Afternoon.

502 days ago by gizmodyne | 6 comments »

Baby Got BackToday we completed our four cabinet boxes’ parts by cutting the groove for the backs. This sounds simple but we had to do a ton of double checking. Plus, I don’t think I mentioned that my biscuit joiner needed a little tune up. After last week’s dry fit, I realized that several of the cabinet rails had slightly miscut biscuits. So we recut 10 rails today. Screwing down the biscuit joiner helped as well. So, on to the tablesaw to cut the groove and trim the...

this artisan house #2: more from the artisan kitchen

607 days ago by scottb | 2 comments »

The two spurtles I made last fall in a woodturning class. The top one is oak the bottom is cherry. Both are finished with walnut oil, and so far remain unused. I’ve only seen Alton Brown over on the Food Network use one to make oatmeal, or perhaps it was haggis. I just don’t seem to make enough of either to neccessitate two spurtles! The turner, my brother-in-law liberated from a broken cutting board. Maple. I posted this entry pretty much verbatim over at wordpress (oh ...

Kitchen Cabinets #1: Prologue

448 days ago by Zuki | 10 comments »

Well . . . Im starting one of my largest projects to date . . . a set of kitchen cabinets for our new home. These will be made from solid poplar with no glues or adhesives. I will be using pocket hole joinery throughout the entire project. First step is to order the lumber. We will be getting it from a local lumber warehouse who will have to get it from Quebec or Ontario. Prior to ordering I need to know how much lumber I will need for the project. DW has a detailed plan of the cabi...
