Slow DownThings actually slowed down a lot during these weeks from our perspective, as the amount of work in the kitchen apperaed to be moving slowly. Plaster work and sanding are not exactly exciting. Lots of sanding. We spent time running around buying tile and so on.

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. SummaryThere was a lot going on in the days after the demolition. I worked on staining the guest room and millwork repairs to the kitchen. I oversaw the coordination of the electrical after the plumber left. The guys worked on stripping and sanding and more stripping. Here we go….

I Feel Boxed In
So without Kristin I headed to the shop. Big mistake.. I need to be double checked.
Mistake 1: Above you can see that I cut the dovetails on the front of the drawers. Dovetails go on sides! Duh…. Now they are decorative box joints. I will pin for extra strength.
Mistake 2: I did not chuck the bit tight. It slipped while cutting the dado for the drawer bottom. Here you can see the hole. I enlarged it for repair. (More on that later)

Building BoxesWe started to get stressed about completing both cabinets in the next two weeks in time for the first annual wood competition at our school. So we made the decision to complete one cabinet. Today we started to build the drawers. Our drawers will be dovetailed in the front and dadoed in the back. They will receive another nicer drawer front.

Baby Got BackToday we completed our four cabinet boxes’ parts by cutting the groove for the backs. This sounds simple but we had to do a ton of double checking.
Plus, I don’t think I mentioned that my biscuit joiner needed a little tune up. After last week’s dry fit, I realized that several of the cabinet rails had slightly miscut biscuits. So we recut 10 rails today. Screwing down the biscuit joiner helped as well.

The two spurtles I made last fall in a woodturning class. The top one is oak the bottom is cherry. Both are finished with walnut oil, and so far remain unused. I’ve only seen Alton Brown over on the Food Network use one to make oatmeal, or perhaps it was haggis. I just don’t seem to make enough of either to neccessitate two spurtles!

Well . . . Im starting one of my largest projects to date . . . a set of kitchen cabinets for our new home. These will be made from solid poplar with no glues or adhesives. I will be using pocket hole joinery throughout the entire project.
First step is to order the lumber. We will be getting it from a local lumber warehouse who will have to get it from Quebec or Ontario. Prior to ordering I need to know how much lumber I will need for the project.
