After I got the counter top in I did the thing which makes your heart beat fast. I cut a hole in the top of the sink.
It was planned, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
Once that hole is there, there is no going back.
So for the next 3 hours, I put in the faucet.
Hooked up the new Dish Washer.
And put in the cabinet that will hold the trash containers.
And what do you get. A plumbing nightmare. The drains from the two sinks are at a different height. and ar...

My wife says I can’t do anything else before I start on her Kitchen. Well except for her hall table and ??. Of course there is also the Summer Contest.
This is going to be a multiple phase project. I need to do something with the floor. We are on a cement slab floor and it is killing both of our legs. The kitchen had a Pergo floor when we bought the house, but we had a frozen water line before we moved in and the Pergo floor got curled edges, so it was all pulled up.
I don’t...

The Hole in My KitchenFor the past two years we have lived with a hole in the wall of the kitchen where the fridge was. I was going to turn this into a pantry, but we decided to put the fridge back in.
We found a fridge that would accept custom panels. It is 36” wide. and only 24” deep to the doors. We had to cut back one stud in the wall to accommodate the depth and reinforce the floor for the weight, but the hole/nook is ready for the fridge.
DesignI drew up several design...

Here are some pictures of the cabinets I built! Unfortunately, the builder hadn’t gotten some of the appliances, so the photographer was unable to get pictures of the bar, and one side of the island where the microwave sits. I hope that once they are in, I can get him back in for some more pictures.
The kitchen. The island is a very deep blue, and distressed on all edges. The corner posts are chamfered. The granite on the island is one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve see...

Kitchen Remodel – New pics added…
Well, March is here and the shop is now open. I had planned to have the design of the new kitchen finished but it’s not. What a great use of the winter down time but the design process has been long and hard fought with my wife. We have very different tastes and I was just happy to agree on the cabinet style but where to put them and what type of hardware has been the road block. Oh yeah then came the gut and redo of the down stairs b...

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood.
They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

Well I started the Buffet / Hutch. If I don’t get started I won’t have anything to say without getting myself in trouble, when my wife asks me what I’m making in the shop.
I started out by making a full size template on plywood for all of the milling that needs to be done on the legs.
Can you believe that those two templates have all of the instructions for milling 8 surfaces on the legs? Now you may ask what do you mean by 8 surfaces. This is the way that I was taught when you make ...

I was going to wait to put anything up on this project but this might be getting put on hold due to my first commission.
It is a small kitchen, my own. All 3/4” Red Oak Plywood carcases. Hickory Face Frame and Solid ends. Jatoba Edge Grain top 1 1/4” thick. It is going to get a nice small crown that stays off the cyling with accent lighting. It is also going to get a light rail on the bottom of the upper cabinets. I now have the dovetail drawers complete (poplar) and inst...

So, naturally I did not start playing with sketchup simply to make a small tea box. I started playing with it to be sure I could make use of it… and use it to work out the design to something much larger that would hold the tea boxes. That would be a bigger kitchen ;)
This is really helping me to work out tons of design issues well before starting the cutting. I have done it in a previous life by cutting out scale model pieces in graph paper (remember those days???) but this is fa...

Buddy of mine gave me a chunk of bowling alley earlier this year. I was going to make Something out of it, and my wife asked if I would make a rolling kitchen island to replace our kitchen table.
It needed a little cleanup on the ends, and I lucked out, only barely nicking this nail with a router bit.
The plan is for it to be counter height:
I decided to do a decorative treatment on the ends of the rails, somewhat ‘greene and greene’ influenced, but just out o...
