Well, it all started just a couple weeks before Christmas. I knew it was coming but didn’t appreciate the impact it would have. My girlfriend, Heather, and I decided that we wanted to live together but I didn’t want to leave my living space because it’s in the building I work in and I always wanted that warehouse living experience before I decided to truck it back out to the country.

Recently I’ve been updating my kitchen. Resurfaced the cabinets, built a new top, stone on the wall, new wood floors etc. Since the kids have moved on, I’ve decided to build an island with stools. The top will probably have stone recessed in the center to match the wall treatment. This will also allow us to set hot pans etc. on it. Right now I’m waiting on my new table saw to arrive, so I’ll begin the project as soon as it gets here. I’ll also be running crown m...

Well today I was setting up my new router table – which was given to me in pieces (minus instruction manual), well new is a relative term, as I have owned it for months but had too many other things on my ‘to do’ list.
I was about to start making a set of cupboard doors for my Mum’s Birthday on the 20th.
I was not feeling 100% but certainly well enough for some workshop therapy.

After I got the counter top in I did the thing which makes your heart beat fast. I cut a hole in the top of the sink.
It was planned, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
Once that hole is there, there is no going back.
So for the next 3 hours, I put in the faucet.
Hooked up the new Dish Washer.
And put in the cabinet that will hold the trash containers.

Well the base cabinet is in place and the position of the sink was determined so I drew an outline of the sink and I put a 3/4” line around the inside.
I cut the straight lines using the battery operated skill saw, and the corners with a jig saw.
I used hot melt glue and put down wooden blocks so that the sink could be placed in the correct position and be able to placed in position fast.
To take the blocks off you just whack them with a hammer (Sideways).

I built the base cabinet where the sink would go. It’s the same size as the one that is being replaced with the exception that the existing cabinet didn’t go into the corner. It stopped just past the sink. I guess cost cutting on the previous owner.
The sink is not normally mounted upside down in the bottom of the cabinet. I had it here to find the correct positioning to cut the hole in the counter top.

Well I took the counter top back out to the driveway today to glue the two pieces together. (See previous Blog in this series)
I set up the Corian on my sawhorses in the driveway and pre set all of the clamp that I’d need to hold the pieces while the glue dried.
The long MDF strips were to keep the surface from bowing while the two pipe clamps pulled the seam together. A piece of maple was put on the edge to keep the pipe clamps from breaking off any pieces on the edge.

I originally wanted raised panel arches for over the windows in the kitchen similar to some I had seen at Menards. That was three years ago. I drew them up full scale and gave them to the cabinetmaker who did our kitchen. He never got to them so I decided I would make them. I had done all the trim work in the kitchen, fluted some pieces, and added corner blocks with rosettes to trim between cabinets in the dining room.

Here are some pictures of the cabinets I built! Unfortunately, the builder hadn’t gotten some of the appliances, so the photographer was unable to get pictures of the bar, and one side of the island where the microwave sits. I hope that once they are in, I can get him back in for some more pictures.
