121 days ago by Straightpiped | 5 comments »

I was going to wait to put anything up on this project but this might be getting put on hold due to my first commission. It is a small kitchen, my own. All 3/4” Red Oak Plywood carcases. Hickory Face Frame and Solid ends. Jatoba Edge Grain top 1 1/4” thick. It is going to get a nice small crown that stays off the cyling with accent lighting. It is also going to get a light rail on the bottom of the upper cabinets. I now have the dovetail drawers complete (poplar) and inst...

Kitchen Re-do

393 days ago by fredc | 5 comments »

Like most of us in the northern clime who don’t have a heated work shop I’ve really been chomping at the bit to get started on my projects. The big project I have set for myself is to build and install new kitchen cabinets. A very ambitious and somewhat daunting prospect for someone of my limited experience, but exciting too. I’ve spent most of the winter researching cabinet building on the internet, which is what led me to LumberJocks, lucky find. Now tho, I think that ...

Sandbar #3: Kitchen Cabinet Installation

687 days ago by Sparky977 | 4 comments »

Today was a big day! I finally installed the cabinets for my first full kitchen today! Rolly, our finisher, painted them at the end of last week. I am still waiting for the drawer guides to be delivered, along with the lazy susan hardware and the knobs, pulls, and shelf pegs. Also, the blue paint on the island is taking FOREVER to cure, so I haven’t taken those doors or the panels that will go on the sides to the jobsite yet. Oh, and I still have toe kicks and crown molding to go ...

Kitchen Remodel #1: Kitchen Remodel - Phase 1 Design

732 days ago by SteveV | 4 comments »

Kitchen Remodel – New pics added… Well, March is here and the shop is now open. I had planned to have the design of the new kitchen finished but it’s not. What a great use of the winter down time but the design process has been long and hard fought with my wife. We have very different tastes and I was just happy to agree on the cabinet style but where to put them and what type of hardware has been the road block. Oh yeah then came the gut and redo of the down stairs b...

Process #2: Process: Farm Tables With David Ellison

26 days ago by weirdwolf | 3 comments »

New England is a corner of the United States rich with tradition. David Ellison, known on Etsy as lorimerantiques, and to many of his Providence, Rhode Island neighbors as The Lorimer Workshop, builds furniture steeped in such tradition. He is not only fascinated by the New England legacy, but also by how the simple styles of tables built by farmers have evolved in different regions. While his original enthusiasm for woodworking stemmed from restoring antique furniture as a hobby, David’...

Reclaiming space and building my shop

42 days ago by lovinmrv | 3 comments »

It’s time to get organized. I moved to Vt in 2003, a lovely home with a great view and a huge garage/carriage house. The upstairs of the carriage house serves as my office and a guest BR. Downstairs is a big 2 car garage that will serve as my shop. Right now it is hopelessly crammed with too much stuff…some mine, some my ex’s, and is home to a solar heating project I’m working on. So, in order of priority, my tasks are: 1. Finish and store first solar pan...

SummaryThere was a lot going on in the days after the demolition. I worked on staining the guest room and millwork repairs to the kitchen. this artisan house #1: artisan household

1177 days ago by scottb | 3 comments »

Back in my lumberjocks interview, I mentioned one of my lifelong goals was to fill the house with useful items made by myself, as well as other artists and artisans. (while paring down all the cheaply made, hand-me-down, and mass manufactured items) Here’s a quick first look at how things have been shaping up over the past several years. My wifes cousin, Tim made these pottery bowls as a wedding gift, even stamped them with his own chop (signature) before firing and glazing. T...

Learning to design #5: Kitchen - wall of cabinets - approved design

56 days ago by mtkate | 2 comments »

Finally, I have an approved design to proceed. The ghost image in the foreground is where my island will be after I knock out the walls between the galley kitchen and the room next to it. The big gray thing on the right is my fridge (it will stay there). The square on the right hand wall is a window that I cannot move without LARGE expenses – so it’s going to stay. I added translucent glass to see what the arrangement will look like. The interior shelving is sized to ho...
