Building BoxesWe started to get stressed about completing both cabinets in the next two weeks in time for the first annual wood competition at our school. So we made the decision to complete one cabinet. Today we started to build the drawers. Our drawers will be dovetailed in the front and dadoed in the back. They will receive another nicer drawer front.
Step One. Cutting out the knots.
Step Two. Resawing. We were able to get two 1/2” thick pieces out of each board.
Step Thre...

After I got the counter top in I did the thing which makes your heart beat fast. I cut a hole in the top of the sink.
It was planned, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
Once that hole is there, there is no going back.
So for the next 3 hours, I put in the faucet.
Hooked up the new Dish Washer.
And put in the cabinet that will hold the trash containers.
And what do you get. A plumbing nightmare. The drains from the two sinks are at a different height. and ar...

Where’s my Camera Cord?I lost my camera cord about a week ago so I haven’t been able to post photos recently. So some catch up with pics… (Borrowed my sister’s cord).
Kitchen…. Cabinets anyone? If you followed the cabinet making journey you have witnessed some of the madness behind our method. And this week I got to install them finally.
The kitchen is stained and painted now…
I stained the cabinets and trim then finished with dewaxed shellac and thre...

Yes it is finished and I have my shop back, but just for a short while. Monday my cabinet shop goes into full swing. I've held back while I built my house but the time has come to catch up with some bills. Knotty Alder with a natural finish.

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood.
They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

Well the base cabinet is in place and the position of the sink was determined so I drew an outline of the sink and I put a 3/4” line around the inside.
I cut the straight lines using the battery operated skill saw, and the corners with a jig saw.
I used hot melt glue and put down wooden blocks so that the sink could be placed in the correct position and be able to placed in position fast.
To take the blocks off you just whack them with a hammer (Sideways).
I ...

Well it’s been 232 days since I last posted on my Kitchen remodel. It’s not that I haven’t done any work. It’s just that I haven’t posted.
I’d built the base cabinets and installed them in earlier blogs and it was time to get the drawer fronts created.
Let me say this, “My wife is a trooper, she is willing to live with the mess (begrudgingly), but she still puts food on the table and doesn’t make me take her out to eat until it’s fin...

Recently I’ve been updating my kitchen. Resurfaced the cabinets, built a new top, stone on the wall, new wood floors etc. Since the kids have moved on, I’ve decided to build an island with stools. The top will probably have stone recessed in the center to match the wall treatment. This will also allow us to set hot pans etc. on it. Right now I’m waiting on my new table saw to arrive, so I’ll begin the project as soon as it gets here. I’ll also be running crown m...

Well . . . Im starting one of my largest projects to date . . . a set of kitchen cabinets for our new home. These will be made from solid poplar with no glues or adhesives. I will be using pocket hole joinery throughout the entire project.
First step is to order the lumber. We will be getting it from a local lumber warehouse who will have to get it from Quebec or Ontario. Prior to ordering I need to know how much lumber I will need for the project.
DW has a detailed plan of the cabi...

Now I have a pair of tongs and a pair of spurtles right next to the stove. Why do I seem to be making my own tools in pairs?
At least I think I’ll get more use out of the tongs than the (so far unused) spurtles. At least they were educational when I was learning how to turn them!
I won’t stop at two tongs though. I have a pair of whisk style tongs with plastic handles that have broken. I should be able to epoxy the business end of the tool into a matching oak handle. The...
