I posted this over in the forums yesterday, but it’s only gotten one reply (appreciate the guess, Scott!) so I thought I’d try again over here on my blog. Take a look at this piece of kempas sapwood (click for larger image):
What’s up with that ugly streaking? Do you think it’s just the board, or could it be something that is typicall of all kempas sapwood? Even though I only need thin strips of it for my dovetail box, I’m wondering if even that is possible.

I have to say, the thought of trying to flatten 16(ish) boards entirely by hand (for the bench top) is a bit daunting. But I lined up the six I have done a cursory planing on, and they look like they mostly line up. Of course, I think they all have a slight bow, but at least they’re all bowing to the same extent. It’ll be an artistic bench with the “bent” look. ;^)

I mentioned recently that I felt like actually making something before working on my bench. What better project for my beginner skills than a simple dovetail box? I haven’t waded through the loads of plans online for boxes, so this plan of mine might not work. Let me know what you think.
First, I had an idea that maybe I could build the entire box out of a single block of 2×4 that is 5 1/2” long. Here’s my block – it’s kempas by the way (click for big siz...

One of the hardest things about building anything here is finding nice wood. It seems that if you want anything better than standard construction lumber, you’re up the creek. That’s bizarre in a country that does so much logging and has so much nice exotic wood (I guess it’s mostly exported).
At least for a bench, standard construction lumber is just fine. Since I’ll be using 2×6s for my legs, I needed something that would match it in thickness (I’ll be tenoning the legs up into the be...
