There has been a great deal of chatter across the interweb on saw files, or the lack thereof, and if nothing else it’s heightened my awareness as I look through rust piles at fleas, auctions, etc. Yesterday I stopped at what otherwise is a regular haunt to find an irregular site: Bins containing saw files marked $1, $2, $3 etc based on length. Well, I bunched up all the Keen Kutter files in whatever bin had them, then rounded out the search will files marked Nicholson USA and even a ...

The first bench plane that I purchased was a Buck Bros jack plane. I bought it at Home Depot on a whim. I typically like to research products before purchasing them, but I failed to do that with this plane. It looked nice enough, but I didn’t really know what to look for at the time. Alas, my Buck Bros plane was a big disappointment because I didn’t know how to tune it up and it left a rough, chunky finish on the wood. This was a fun plane to restore and tune for several reasons. First of all when I got this plane I took it apart to clean and right away I could see that the iron and chip breaker were both much thicker and heavier then the traditional bench plane iron/breaker. It was as if someone had replaced the original iron and breaker with a new Hock Iron and breaker. This is the first and only antique plane that I have purchased that had a blade and breaker of this sort. Another fun but difficult task ...
