Building Jewelry Boxes with EZInlays #2: First Cuts for RoseBud

Started to build the RoseBud inlay that will go on the lid of the Bubinga and Purple Heart jewelry box. For this inlay I am using maple, yellow heart, rosewood, and kauri. Tomorrow I am going to do some sand shading to give the inlay a 3D effect. Should be pretty cool… P.S. The only down side to sand shading is the wood can sometimes stink and yellow heart is one of the worst!!! It is almost as bad as zebra wood… not quite but almost!!!

So, yesterday while slabbing some Eucalyptus where is was felled in town, our local feller stopped by to ask if I wanted some log sections of a tree they had just felled. When I asked what it was he didn’t know, but promised to fine out from one of our local tree experts. True to his word, he drove by half an hour later and told me it was New Zealand Kauri Pine. Ancientwood has developed a technique for filling large, structural cracks, sometimes found in Ancient Kauri slabs. This is a step-by-step approach for creating a flat surface with beautiful patterns and design. 1. The slab must first be flattened. This can be done with a drum sander, planer or a CNC router.2.
