Hall Table #1: A little catch up

660 days ago by shawnseanderson | 0 comments »

I thought that I would take a little time to show how we went about the construction of the hall table. This project is currently in the final stages but I can backtrack a little for the sake of discussion. Check back a little later and I will update with some pictures. We started the table off at the lumber store. (almost my favorite place to be) We spent a good deal of time trying to decide what wood that we wanted to use and finally settled on Mahogany. We had some concern about the col...

Which Tool Would You Buy???

669 days ago by Brad | 10 comments »

My birthday is coming up and I’ve told everyone nothing but money because I want to get some new tools. I’m guessing all in all I’ll have around $500 to spend. I’m considering a band saw, 13” planer, biscuit jointer or a new router/plunge router combo. So what do you guys think??? Which is going to give me the best advance in shop versatility?

Review: Steel City 8" Industrial parallelogram jointer 40605

677 days ago by iannlb | 4 comments »

Wow quite an ordeal, order placed 18Nov. 2007 recieved 2 weeks later. The crate of the jointer base was smashed apart on the infeed end. The manager of the local WoodCraft store (1.5 hours away) told me don’t worry about it if its damaged they would replace it. I took home both boxes ( mistakes 1&2). The jointer base was crushed in 5/8 in the center of the front and back to the point of the logo popping loose. Woodcraft said no problem we’ll order another one. On 19 No...

Wood Scrap Box #1: Parts and Pieces

682 days ago by CutNRun | 4 comments »

Two days before Christmas, my wife casually mentions that she would like a jewelry box. Hmmm, don’t think the timing was very good. Having completed the 2×4 project, I decided to try to put together a jewelry box from the small pieces of wood laying around in my shop. I had a decent amount of 1/2” cherry, some figured maple, some oak, and a small amount of paduk. After spending a few days laying out a design and seeing if I had enough wood, I started cutting and gluing.Th...

2X4 Winter Contest #1: The beginning

693 days ago by Jamie | 4 comments »

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left. I cut some of the pieces today, 4 – 18” long pieces have been jointed and edge-glued together to form one plank (needed it to be a little longer than what is r...

New to the hobby, a look inside the beginners mind. #1: the first few tools in the shop

694 days ago by Jason Wheeler | 6 comments »

I have to say setting up a wood shop is just as much work and cash, if not more, then setting up a steel shop. Luckily a few of the steel tools are useful and will come in handy to the wood shop. I have also a few tools from a set of cedar drafting drawers I built oh, 5 years back. It was a one time thing and at the time living in an apartment, dust was every where. All I really had was a Dewalt biscuit joiner and a random orbital sander, that was it. A pic of the cedar drawers, mmmm they ...

Bandsawn Box #1 #1: Getting the wood ready

697 days ago by Karson | 22 comments »

Well I went to the attic, actually surface area of the wood rack in the workshop and picked up a Bigleaf Maple Burl piece that I bought about 5 years ago on eBay. It came from the Pacific Northwest of the USA. The piece had been water blasted to remove all of the bark off the outer edge of the burl and that leaves the spikes that are seen here. The block had been dipped in wax to minimize the drying of it. I then went to the jointer (spiral Carbide blades) and cleaned up the edges. ...

First Shop #4: Plans for the New Year! (Purchase Plan)

702 days ago by YooperCasey | 5 comments »

A new year is almost upon us and I’m going to tell you folks about my tool purchase plans for this year and see if I can get some good advice. Also, as a chance to pat myself on the back, today is my one year anniversary of quitting smoking! If I would have saved what I spent for cigarettes if I would have smoked, I would have $3650 to purchase a woodshop with. Then it’d be all Festool and Gold! The first task I had was deciding what major tools I would want. I’ve manage...

Hall table #1: A Hall table for my wife - Thorsen Variety

715 days ago by Karson | 20 comments »

My wife was starting to get ready for some Christmas decorations. She notified me that she’d like a Sofa table to place against the wall in the kitchen to put decorations on. She also stated a requirement that it be like the Thorsen table that was built by my son Dave. for the Thorsen Table Challenge that we had earlier here on LumberJocks.com . His table has aged some since Dave made it and it now sits in the kitchen where my wife puts her purse when she comes into the house. It’s wh...

Holtzapffel Bench #4: Plane Old Planes

733 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 5 comments »

Last night I decided to commit to some face planing to get my boards ready for the glue-up. I’ve cut rough dimensions of the four stretchers and two boards each to make up two legs. To do this, I need to joint plane the faces so I get a good flat surface to merge. Afterwards, I will be finishing up the dimensions to exact measurements and smooth planing. Unfortunately, I don’t have a quality hand plane in my arsenal. I worked the face of one piece last night for about an ho...
