I blogged a couple of weeks ago about what I should charge for a small box I was asked to make.
I thought that those of you who haven’t delved into the wonderful world of box making might like to journey along with me as I make this commissioned box. As part of my workbench project I needed to mill up a somewhat large piece of lumber for the main chop on my face vise. It was larger than my 6” Jointer could handle. I needed to find an easy way to mill the 2 large faces. I have been wanting to make a Planer Sled for awhile now, so that’s what I did.

I’ve been fiddling with wooden hinges, and can’t get good dowel stock. Epecially dowel stock that matches the species of wood I’m working with. I gleaned this jig from another Rob Cosman video.
I took a 2” piece of walnut from the scrap pile. I drilled a 1/4” (0.247” actually) hole in it close to one face. I took a few passes through the drum sander to just show the hole cut. I chamfered one end to accept the workpiece stock. I clamped an old plane...

Okay, here’s one of the most useful jigs that I’ve ever made. And if I lost i tomorrow, I could build another in about fifteen minutes. I’m not going to include any dimensions as you should make one to fit your own situation.
I made this up obviously with scraps. If I made it out of anything else, it wouldn’t work any better.

A couple of whiles ago when I posted my lumber rack, some of the LJ’s inquired about my panel jig. I figured that if I ever needed to replace it, then it would be right to blog it for you. I’m not going to take credit for this as I have seen it somewhere else in one of the many woodworking mags. Just can’t remember which one!

I was looking in a magazine at some jigs different guys had built and I marvel at how clean their shops are and how pristine the jigs are: all that new wood and finish. Can’t say mine are anything like that ~ almost always made from scrap and then stuff that isn’t usable because it is damaged, has water spots or stains, etc. But I thought I’d share how I sand small stuff and edges with my belt sander.

At the request of oscorner, I’ve posted some pics of the jig that I use to cut box joints on the table saw.
The box joint jig that I use is a shop made jig from ¾” Birch ply. I recall getting the plans from a Mark Duginske book (“Mastering Woodworking Machines” – I think). I remember that he called a “Universal Table Saw Jig” that you adapt for making box joints. Drawer Parts Galore
I started by squaring some panels to the width of the drawers. To save time I rabbeted the entire panel. Later I would rip them to create the sized drawer fronts.
Testing the drawer front fit. You can see the drawer pieces in each cubby awaiting their fronts.
The backs of the drawers are held by dadoes 1/2” in from the back of the drawer. I got to spend some quality time with the new crosscut sled.If you squint you can see that there is another 1/2”...
