resawing #2: first test of the new jig!

166 days ago by Gary Fixler | 41 comments »

I routed in grooves on the fence of my new resawing jig for screwing logs to it, and with that, it was ready for action: Here’s a video – shot on yesterday’s lunch break, edited together last night, with the jig I made on Sunday – of my very first resawing work. The Timberwolf blade works very well, with no resistance and a clean cut. The Craftsman 18” wood/metal bandsaw is a slightly different story. It’s wobbly, which is just a ‘feature&#...

Another mixed bag from Grizzly

891 days ago by coloradoclimber | 31 comments »

Well I did it again, I ordered from Grizzly and got what I should have expected. I’ve been wanting a tenoning jig, I read some reviews, Grizzly is rated a good value, generally as functional as any other brands. I looked at the pictures of the grizzly and others and decided the grizzly looked just as good and was substantially less money. I’ll be reviewing the tenoning jig in another thread but for now here’s a short intro to other stuff I found in the box. I ordered...

Homemade Bandsaw Blade Tension Quick-Release

665 days ago by Blake | 30 comments »

Grab some popcorn… I made a movie!(Make sure the volume is up… it might be a little quiet) Story:I have been working really hard to tune up my bandsaw lately. I really wanted one of these:...for tensioning and detensioning the blade. But I am at the end of my budget and can’t spend another $150. I had seen pictures of a homemade version in a magazine and decided to make my own. I posted this to try to get ideas. Anyway, this is what I came up with and it works gre...

All in One Jig Part 1 #1: Diamonds and Triangles

59 days ago by dustbunny | 28 comments »

After posting the quilted lazy susan project, http://lumberjocks.com/projects/21623, many of you said you would like to see the jig for this project. I set out immediately to upgrade the jig. There were cuts I wanted to incorporate into this jig, and my original was warping and needed repair anyway. So here it is – 24” X 33” I am pretty proud of this jig, not only because I made it, but because the cuts made from this jig are right on the money. The first ...

Cabinet Progress #8: The fir was flying.

946 days ago by gizmodyne | 24 comments »

Building BoxesWe started to get stressed about completing both cabinets in the next two weeks in time for the first annual wood competition at our school. So we made the decision to complete one cabinet. Today we started to build the drawers. Our drawers will be dovetailed in the front and dadoed in the back. They will receive another nicer drawer front. Step One. Cutting out the knots. Step Two. Resawing. We were able to get two 1/2” thick pieces out of each board. Step Thre...

My version of GaryK's jointing jig

302 days ago by sIKE | 22 comments »

I have some 10” wide cherry that I need to make four square and do not want to rip down to six inches so I finally built GaryKs jig to do this for me. However I was trying to re-utilize some casters that I had laying around and they didn’t work :( seems that they need to be fixed for this to work well. So this is it sans the casters which are on order from Surplus Center. I am hope to draw this up in SketchUp when everything is said and done.

Making a Small Wooden Box #1: Getting Started

842 days ago by Don | 22 comments »

I blogged a couple of weeks ago about what I should charge for a small box I was asked to make. I thought that those of you who haven’t delved into the wonderful world of box making might like to journey along with me as I make this commissioned box. I was given the outside dimension for the box, as the owner intends to place it in a chest of drawers, so it must fit the size constraints of the drawer. The box will be 95mm high x 360mm wide x 240mm deep (approximately 3.75” x 14...

Useful jigs for your shop #2: A landing apron for your miter jig.

140 days ago by Bob #2 | 21 comments »

I have trouble with my tablesaw not having enough room back of the blade to allow me to pull my miter sled back to cut panels.I have a dedicated sled but sometimes I just need an inch or two without setting up another jig.I made this apron from scrap that fits in the fence slot and lets the miter travel off the table and still slide forward for the cut. From shop pics 2009 There is nothing much to say as it just pops into the slot and away I go. From shop pics 2009 This shot shows abo...

Panel Cutting Jig

602 days ago by Dadoo | 21 comments »

A couple of whiles ago when I posted my lumber rack, some of the LJ’s inquired about my panel jig. I figured that if I ever needed to replace it, then it would be right to blog it for you. I’m not going to take credit for this as I have seen it somewhere else in one of the many woodworking mags. Just can’t remember which one! This jig is used lying on top of sawhorses or the bench to crosscut and rip large sheets of material. I say “material” because we’...
