Stanley No. 62 Low Angle Jack Plane Some of the modern high end hand tool manufacturers have been marketing “low angle jack planes” for years now like it is something nobody has ever thought of before. I mean, I had never heard of a low angle jack before I started reading reviews on Lie Nielson and Veritas versions in Popular Woodworking Magazine. Veritas Low Angle Jack Plane: And of course we all know that Stanley, the most famous maker of quality hand tools has SERI...
Here is a Defiance Jack that I picked up. The plane was in wonderful condition just missing a cap iron screw. This is more for the box restoration than for the plane. The old tape came off really easy with a bit of help from a heat gun. It just left a really nasty sticky residue. I just keep wiping and applying heat until no more came up. I didn’t really want to experiment with trying to remove all of the residue. Here is how I held the sides together while I...
I’ve been working on this for 6 or 8 months. I’d do a little, loose interest, and set it back on the shelf. It sat so long I wound up using the frog, blade, cap iron and cap for another plane long since forgotten. The current frog has a broken top, so the lateral adjustment lever is gone. I will need to find 2. One for the nice #4 it came from and a replacement for this one. The infill is made from ash. The front knob was a broken knob off a transitional. I had originally plann...

(continued from Lee Valley Interview, part I) Following my interview with Robin Lee, President of Lee Valley, I took my Canadian Film Crew with me as I headed to my “local” Lee Valley Store, which is just an hour away, for my very first public appearance as MsDebbieP, the Canadian LumberJock. The weather was the hottest that we’ve had all summer and, boy oh boy, was the hat and coat ever hot! Inside, Don Riley, the store manager, gave me a tour, starting with the warehouse area i...

While visiting family in Tennessee this week (hence the “pappaw”), I managed to rummage through my late grandfather’s very scary tool shed, which has been pretty much been locked up since he died around 13 years ago. I found some ancient woodworking stuff, which is in pretty terrible condition. This includes a #26 jack plane (with a wooden sole) with some unique properties. I can’t quite date it because the info on the toe doesn’t appear to match anything I ca...
Hi thanks for stopping by. I am currently in the process of learning wood working, and before I jumped right into it I wanted to take my time to go and learn how the old school guys did things before my time. Sure you can go out and buy one of them fancy planers or jointers, and complete a job a little faster, but doing things that way there is no learning involved. Once you have put the wood thru the planer and it comes out the other side, thats it buddy, your on to the next step of what...
