I had $30 Amazon rewards, so I ordered these: My woodworking budget is nil, so I was looking for something cheap and decent that I could learn with and I decided on these after reading reviews on several different brands. The reviews on amazon.com are pretty good, but not so good in other places. I also read somewhere else that these were decent starter chisels after they’ve been sharpened. It’s funny how on amazon.com one of the pictures of these shows “Sheffield ...
I hav had these power press bar clamps for over a decade forgotten in a bin and used them for the first time today. they are nice! nicest pipe clamp I’ve ever used. what a shame they were discontinued after Irwin bought the company. (aside: I’m not happy with Irwin, they’ve ruined Marples chisels) I’m wondering if I can use these to make a Moxon vise? here’s a quick sketch to be followed with a slow sketchup…

Hello Everbody, I’m brand new to wood working and new to lumberjocks and so far everybody on here has been wonderful and welcoming and I just have a quick question. I’m planning on buying my first set of chisels and I’m thinking about an Irwin 4-piece chisel set. I’ve read many reviews about Irwin Marples Blue Chip chisels but non about this set of Irwin Marple chisels. Are these good chisels? The trash man giveth and the trash man taketh away…. That would seem to sum up most of my woodworking experiences so far :) At any rate, I pulled the trigger on a new Dewalt scroll saw. I have been using a cheaper model for some time and I made do but wanted to work with something a little nicer and get those compound cuts and fretwork moving. I have been using my bench for awhile, but wanted a dedicated stand for this one. I downloaded a free plan from Wood awhile back and was going...
22 days ago I posted about the decimation of my Hollywood Junipers (Juniperus chinensis). My plan was to go through and ‘limb’ them, or at this scale, to ‘twig’ them. Little by little, I’ve been going out there for 15 minutes or so at a time, sawing each little twig off with a stroke of the Irwin carpenter’s saw, then scrubbing the sap off my hands. What a giant pain, but I admit it was fun. I love the feel and sound of the saw, the smell of the junipers, g...
After talking about the most embarrassing tools I own, I thought it would be good to get my mind off of these purchases by talking about my favorite tools in the shop. Feel free to add yours in the comments, or on your own blog (and post the link in the comments). 3. My Irwin chisels. From what I hear, Irwin chisels haven’t lost much of the original quality that their predecessor Marples provided. And I love ‘em. Use ‘em all the time. The best thing? If I ever do run out ...
Last time I laid out my equipment purchase plans. No progress on purchases though I have decided on the Ridgid TS3650 contractor saw. I see the Woodworking show is coming to Milwaukee in February and that is only 5 hours south for me, so I may see what kind of deal I can snag there on a table saw. I’ve spent the last few evenings working on my core skills. Marking out, cutting, fitting and basically getting used to how certain things behave. This includes trying out my new Bosch CS20...
