Inspired

06-03-2017 11:25 PM by Ron Aylor | 13 comments »

Impressed with Elm55’s most excellent Philadelphia Card Table and inspired by Woodbutchery’s rather profound blog post, A promise: practice with purpose ... I decided to spend some time today practicing a bit of gadrooning.  I plan to incorporate this decorative motif in my next Prie Dieu build. The build will not start for a few more months, but there’s no time like the present to practice.   Not perfect, but … practice just might take care of that!

Woodworking as Therapy

05-14-2017 01:57 PM by Bravesst | 7 comments »

Allow me to introduce myself to Lumberjocks. I’m Mike and I’m a retired FDNY captain, been through lots of stuff, and about a year ago I got reconnected to woodworking. In the early nineties, I managed to put a small shop together with just some basic tools and skills, and I actually designed and cranked out a few pieces that I still use in my home today. I’d learned everything pretty much from books and magazines. Fast forward to 2016 and the magic of the internet. I’...

Carving Inspiration

12-11-2016 10:20 PM by Brit | 17 comments »

Working in central London as I have been for the past 5 years, I draw a lot of inspiration from some of the architecture and history that I walk past every day. So many of my fellow commuters just rush along either glued to their mobile phones or staring at the pavement. Sometimes I want to scream at them to LOOK UP! There is so much beauty around us (both natural and man-made) that can invigorate us and brighten our day if we only let it. I have seen a lot of amazing carving on my travels (m...

Holiday Gifts #1: Inspiration and Ideas

10-29-2015 12:28 PM by Sioranth | 2 comments »

I inadvertently have found myself in a position where there is an expectation of woodworking gifts for the holidays this year. I guess that’s what I get for posting all my little projects on Facebook where my family can see them. So, for my father I am going to be making a six-pack beer tote out of mahogany and quarter sawn sycamore. I’m hoping it looks as good as I envision it will when it’s finished. It’s going to have rare earth magnets for catching the bottle ca...

A Strategy for Woodworking #12: How Design Starts

07-24-2014 02:47 AM by Gary Rogowski | 2 comments »

Design starts with a pattern in the sky, a curl in the stem of a plant, the swirl in a coffee cup. It starts with an idea. There is no one single place from which it begins. And so the designer must grab serendipity when it strikes and use it as a stepping stone, a starting point, and then choose from the infinite number of choices then possible. Inspiration is serendipitous. Design on the other hand is hard work and trials and errors and execution. It is iteration and reiteration. It has ...

Woodworking Inspiration #1: Woodworking - a Love Language

03-30-2014 02:27 AM by pps | 0 comments »

Aubrey eagerly sported her tool belt with tucked-in hammer. Everything about her said, “Let’s go build something daddy!” She was ready for anything and wanted to prove she could tackle anything her brothers could – and more. The “weekend” basement remodeling project had morphed into a 2 year marathon. We’d finish one part and my lovely wife would come down the stairs oohing an aahing about how good it looked. Then I’d hear those dreaded next words “But babe, that old _ (insert “w...

Wood Thoughts #2: Yuz got skillz

03-21-2014 01:14 AM by Fr. Thomas Bailey, OSB | 0 comments »

Do you have any favorite, little known, online woodworkers? I was a strange kid. When I was in high school in the mid-nineties my peers were interested in watching Married with Children and playing on their PS1s. (I was still slumming it with my NES.) Sure I was happy to watch an episode of Married with Children; but if I flipped across PBS and the New Yankee Workshop was showing, I was going to stop and see what Norm Abrams was up to. (Though I am pretty sure it was Seattle Grunge Mus...

Guide to the best woodworking videos on YouTube

03-20-2014 12:41 PM by Steve Diogo | 19 comments »

As a beginning woodworker, I’ve spent untold hours watching woodworking videos on YouTube. I’ve learned a lot and I’ve become convinced that YouTube is one of the main drivers of the current woodworking renaissance. But while there’s a lot of great woodworking videos out there, there’s also a lot of crap. Since I don’t have a lot of woodworking skills to share on LumberJocks, I thought I could provide a service by pointing out the YouTube woodworking te...

Pinterest on my board in the shop

01-05-2014 09:12 PM by CueballRosendaul | 3 comments »

I don’t often find myself in the shop twiddling my thumbs on what to make next, but sometimes I need a little inspiration, a quick gift, or a time filler while I’m waiting for a finish to dry. I have a great Pinterest board for woodworking ideas, but I don’t often have my iPad out in the shop, so I simply printed my pins onto paper and hung it on the bulletin board. The first couple pages were portrait, but the rest are landscape which works better because the projects get c...
