This is a repost of my inlay process. The original write up was created several years ago, but I figure it would be nice to add to the Lumberjocks archives. I will eventually do a video on this process, but until then, here is a pictorial from 2005.

Well Dusty and I talked about the broken and fractured stained glass panel. The panel was insured for material costs but definitely not the 70 some hours that were taken to make the panel.

Hey Everyone,
In this episode of the Teen Age Woodworker i will show how i made the square ebony inlay in my hickory picture frames.
!
I found this to be an inlay that i was intimidated with in the beginning but turned out to be a really simple inlay to do that anyone can do with a drill and a chisel to get a nice tight fitting inlay. it took so long to get this video out because i was planning another inlay but that project never worked out. so i hope that you enjoy it!

Please don’t be too critical on this one. This was my first video and also my first attempt to inset an inlay. I had a lot of hours in this table and was very nervous. You may ask, “Why the inlay”. I just wanted an accent.

It’s been a long week, but I am excited to say that I just finished up the 2nd Steak Knife set tonight about 10:15pm CT. Sure, I could go to bed, but not after I blog the milestone. As mentioned here, I did most of the work of building a breakfast table as part of a class. The base is sanded and ready for finishing, but the top needed more work. Inlay channels were already cut during the class, and the table departed looking like this:
Still to do: cut/glue/plane walnut inlays to length, sand the top-top w/ 80 grit before routing top and bottom table edges, sand the whole top, and finish. So here is step one. My intent was to have the routing and sanding done ...

For the past 14 months, I have waited patiently to see if my investment in a prestigious national woodworking show would pay off. Sure it was a lot of fun to be counted acceptable by the jury, and to attend the show, but it is hugely expensive for a small one-man operation like I run here. Not only just the cost of the booth fees, but getting things ready to take is a huge undertaking, renting a truck, fuel, hotel, food, etc. I was disappointed with the “return” on my investmen...

A while back I posted a project that I did in my shop in California with my woodworking friend Jack Hutchison from Houston, TX. Here is that post:
A Krenov Inspired Cabinet on Stand in Six Days
We completed that cabinet during a six day visit by Jack. Our agreement was that at some future date, I would go to Houston and we’d do another six day project in his shop.
So….I arrived at Jack’s and we completed a much more complicated piece in another six day time frame and here it is………....

Some time ago I posted a blog about a dovetail joint I came up with. I call it the radial dovetail. It incorporates handcut dovetails, but rather than using the traditional 1:8 ratio for the dovetail angle for hardwood, each side of each tail varies and is drawn from a perspective point. Then the sides of the box were contoured to blend with the dovetail design.
