Hand Cut Double Dovetail Experiment

1783 days ago by Woodhacker | 71 comments »

After admiring the double and double-double dovetail joints that are capable with the Incra and other jigs, I started thinking, “Why not try this by hand?” So this box is my first experiment with handcut double dovetails. It took me some time to figure out the joinery process, but once I realized a few things about this type of joint, it seemed do-able. It was quite challenging but also a ton of fun. It also does take some degree of patience and precision…which I’m still working on. In...

Thicknessing drum sander - shop made

1911 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 57 comments »

I’ve had a fancy for a thicknessing sander but a 10-20 inch model costs the equivalent of $1000 US over here and there’s no way I can justify that sort of spending so I looked into making one of my own. There’s no shortage of help to be had on the world-wide-web. The links I found useful include: Dominic’s Woodshop Kawika Ukulele Sander Ray Lanham Woodcentral Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery Mother earth The Woodshop Art Herrick Luthiers’ Friend Nick’s drum S...

Ebonizing; Steel Wool and Vinegar

1719 days ago by Allison | 36 comments »

A few months ago I had read an article about ebonizing wood with steel wool and vinegar. Awhile back I tried this and absolutely nothing happened. I never even tried again. Ebonizing is a stain of sorts I guess. I also have heard there are several ways of doing this. The reason the original article caught my eye was because I sure as hell don’t have the money to buy Ebony (wood), and I am forever wanting or needing dark/black wood for my projects and I do not like to use paint, to the ...

Plywood as Flooring

1205 days ago by John Steffen | 11 comments »

I’ve been weighing plywood floor as an option for the main floor of my home (and possibly the second floor and even attic when I finish it). And I was even more inspired by AllorNoThumbs project here: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/27373 The first problem I run into is that I have just over 1000 square foot per floor. I’m not sure I can handle ripping 35 pieces of plywood and running over 200 pieces through the tongue and groove process. Let’s not forget finishing 100...

What is wrong with this site's managers??????

235 days ago by KnotCurser | 35 comments »

I simply can’t believe how many spammers are allowed to simply sign up scads of new “users” every day! These accounts clog up our resources and slow our site down as well as screw up any metrics we keep as far as users and projects posted. Don’t believe me? Do this simple experiment: On the top of the Home Page for LJ’s, click on the “Jocks” tab and choose “most recent”. Simply look at the most recent two pages of “use...

Work(shop) in Progress #6: New Table Saw : Unpacking and Assembly of Ridgid R4511

1521 days ago by PurpLev | 50 comments »

So after much research and debates, I have finally charged the card, and 2 days later the delivery arrived with the new saw in the box (I opted to have it delivered from the store as opposed to pick it up myself – at 450lbs, I simply wouldn’t be able to unload it myself) Delivery from HD was swift and smooth, positive and friendly guy stop at my place saturday morning, and helped me position the box in my garage – I couldn’t be happier (took 5 minutes, 4.5 of those was...

Sawstop and Router Cabinet / Infeed Table / Outfeed Table Project

945 days ago by zzzzdoc | 457 comments »

At the very start, let me give all the credit in the world to Tedth66, whose project this is totally based on, and who has been graciously providing guidance as I build this. This is a modification of his design, adding a few details, and making it work for my shop. I have a 2 car garage / workshop that is tremendously space challenged, so I need to be clever about every square inch. On top of that, I enjoy modifying designs and making them work custom for me. So when I saw Ted’s ...

Polystyrene glue!

1203 days ago by Mark Edmondson | 21 comments »

Fortunately for us wood workers and tinkerers, one of mankind’s most indestructible substances — polystyrene — is easy to repurpose into glue. And since several people have commented on my end grain end table project asking for the secret recipe to my homemade glue, I’m here to provide. However, I’m going to force you to read this entire thing before I get to the point, so bear with me. I work a lot with polystyrene, partly because it can be found everywhere, but mainly because it...

A Six-Tube Scroll Saw Blade Holder

1570 days ago by David | 4 comments »

A Six-Tube Scroll Saw Blade Holder This was a quick and fun shop project. The material came from a small 2/4 board of gum cherry that was left over from another project. It took care to wrap the grain with respect to the sides and back. I almost missed this and had a “T-Chisel” event which caused me to re-do part of the project. Well, actually I had no choice, as I know the recipient has a critical eye! This is a six-tube scroll saw blade holder designed for a woodworker tha...
