Warning - avoid the big box stores, scam alert!

10-22-2008 09:44 PM by Derek Lyons | 8 comments »

Thought I’d better alert you to this scam. Be careful…you could be next. A warning for those Jocks who may be regular Home Depot customers. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don’t be naive enough to think it couldn’t happen to you or your friends. Here’s how the scam works. Two seriously good-looking 20-21 year-old girls come over to your car a...

What Is It #7

06-15-2008 01:04 AM by lew | 5 comments »

Since Odie isn’t posting any more of his stuff, thought I might post another one- Yes, Charlie, it’s a jig. It is NOT a Christmas Tree ornament, a whirly jig for the Jolly Green Giant or scraps sitting on a jointer. Lew

Ms Debbie P's 2008 Shop Tour and Inspection #4: May 31 Visit with MrWoody

06-01-2008 07:42 AM by Douglas Bordner | 7 comments »

This inspection tour is a short hop from Ms.Debbie’s home base to the shop of John James of Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. MrWoody got the wood bug at an early age, ”When I was 8 or 9 my dad brought home some packing crates, not sure why as he was not mechanically inclined. He had a hammer and an old handsaw that I now know was not sharp enough to cut butter. From them I made a ladder so my dog and I could get on the shed roof (I don’t know why) and some boats. I used my allowanc...

Woodworking Safety Week 2008 #1: Readers Poll: Choose the Tagline for Woodworking Safety Week 2008

05-04-2008 09:21 AM by Eric | 15 comments »

As we kick off Woodworking Safety Week 2008, I thought I’d offer some improvement on marketing it to the woodworking community. It seemed like something was missing: a tagline. I mean, just saying “Woodworking Safety Week 2008” sounds kind of boring, don’t you think? So I’m proposing the following taglines for your consideration. Please click on this link and choose the one that sounds most appropriate (or offer your own in the comments below). P.S. This is ju...

A modern Day "Who's on First"

04-08-2008 05:48 PM by Karson | 15 comments »

A 21st Century ‘Who’s on first?’   If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous  sketch, “Who’s on First?” might have turned out similar to this: COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you? COSTELLO: Thanks. I’m setting up an office in my den and I’m thinking  about buying a computer. ABBOTT: Mac? COSTELLO: No, the name’s Lou. ABBOTT: Your computer...

You Know You're from Atlanta when...

04-03-2008 01:07 AM by itsme_timd | 24 comments »

One of our fellow Jocks, Rikkor, posted a great thread on being from Minnesota. I ’did time’ in Nebraska – 11 years – so I can relate to most of it. However, I’ve been down in the glorious South for over 20 years now… I had to throw this out for us Atlanta/Georgia folks! You give directions starting with, “Go down Peachtree” and include the phrase, “When you see the Waffle House.” You only drink Coke or Diet Coke – dri...

Ms Debbie P's 2008 Shop Tour and Inspection #2: Leap Day Visit to the shop of HansonDVM

03-01-2008 06:25 AM by Douglas Bordner | 22 comments »

That’s right it’s Leap Day, that anxiously awaited holiday which arrive but once each four years. With the formalities aside, it’s on to the shop inspection of Joe Hanson, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Lumberjock. I’m sure some cleaning up was done it anticipation of our visit, but this shop is surgically clean. And organized like a tray of instruments. So much better than the usual “Where the heck did I lay that (insert name of missing tool)...

Should I give up woodworking???

02-11-2008 05:05 PM by itsme_timd | 26 comments »

OK, this is just plain sad… I KNOW I’m not the best of the best (yet) but I have to say it was mighty insulting that my entry in the “Not Just Any Box” contest received fewer points than Hap’s entry, “Cedar”. I mean, come on! It’s a picture of a LOG! Let’s compare: Does it have a lid?TD – YesHap – Nooooo… Is it boxy?TD – YesHap – Not so much Can you store items in it?TD – YesHap – ...

02-08-2008 08:20 PM by MtnManMEP | 14 comments »

I think I have all the preliminaries taken care of. Got the profile done, the email preferences set, a couple of projects listed and now I’m in and ready to start being humbled. Seriously, there are a bunch of outstanding looking projects here. I’m confident I can gain knowledge and ideas from this site. I look forward to future exchanges and comments.
