Relief Carving My Birger Sandzen-Inspired Desk Door Panel, A step-by-Step Log.

780 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 18 comments »

I hesitate to do this, that which I am about to do. I don’t fancy myself as a good carver, or a great picture drawer. Especially with so many lumberjocks that are great carvers here that will see this. On top of that, there are so many great carvers on the internet that will stumble onto this blog because they surf the net. With that said, after Mark Mazzo asked about the process I go through to do a carved panel like this one, I thought about it for awhile, and decided to show th...

"This Old Mold House" #5: Hind sight is genius ! My crystal ball...

737 days ago by Dusty | 13 comments »

Of course, hindsight is genius. Duh. Let me take a minute to gloat. It was July 20 2006, when I first took a weekend and worked up plans, bids and did a comprehensive analysis of “This Old Mold House” and a possible offer. After extensive work I met with the owner’s son-in-law to present my findings and conclusions. I worked very hard to make the numbers work. That is, I really wanted to buy the house for remodeling and resale. However, because I didn’t have a ready buy...

Custom Dishwasher Panel Progress #7: So Close I Can Amost Smell the Clean Dishes

ScribingI took Todd’s advice and scribed some hardboard strips. The first two strips did not fit well, but then I switched from the jigsaw to the bandsaw for cut out. It wentso well that I decided to just go ahead and scribe the real trim, since it was lighter and easier to see the pencil lines. Here I have the trim board tacked up level. Here I am setting the compass to the distance that the board needs to lose material. I was shooting for 1/8” below the top of the cabin...

Gingerbread Houses #4: Almost Final Construction

719 days ago by cheller | 7 comments »

Last weekend I made my trek to New Jersey. Friday night was spent enjoying magic tricks, games, and conversation, and a nice long sanding session in my hotel room. Saturday morning was wrestling practice – think room full of testosterone. Saturday afternoon was project time. Our construction team was my nephew, his friend, also 6, and me. First step was gluing up the walls of the house. The boys each took responsibility for an end wall. While making lunch earlier we had been ta...

'This Old Crack House' #46: The Addition part one ...

866 days ago by Dusty | 7 comments »

Selling our existing house was the only major hurtle that had to be overcome before building an addition onto “This Old Crack House”. Coincidently, I’ve held a tool-sale every January in the stain shop. I would sell excess tools. These were refurnished tools that had been replaced with a newer model. Often various manufactures would ask me to test new models and give them feedback. For the most part, they would not expect the tool back at the end of the test and the tool was ours to d...

Gingerbread Houses #1: Explanation and Plans

741 days ago by cheller | 5 comments »

Each year on the first weekend of December I travel to New Jersey to spend the weekend with my nephew, who is now 6. We go swimming at the hotel, have lunch out, and work on a project. The first project, when he was 2, was a set of shelves for the very small first floor bathroom of their house. He didn’t help a lot with that, although he was very sure to make sure that I fixed the bathroom door which had to be removed from the hinges to provide enough room to work in the tiny bathroo...
