Just playing around in the shop and came accross these planes. I made them a couple years ago, and really enjoyed it.
Nothing too fancy, and the basic plans came from a book on making hand planes.
They are a pleasure to use as the shavings come peeling through the throat opening. That nice whoosh sound that only planes make, and shavings thin enough to read through!
And a polished surface that’s left behind. So much satisfaction in using them, knowing you made them.

I have the slat wall paneling completed.
Now, how am I going to arrange my tools?

I would have waited until I made more progress until posting this next one, but since I have been stuck in bed with the flue for three days (and I am good for nothin’ in the shop) I may as well post what I’ve got. The following was done before I got sick.

I started on this shop building project shortly after I retired.
I’d like to show you what I’ve accomplished so far.

Hey guys! Taking advantage of the long weekend here in Canada, (so this was last weekend) I made a better base for my dremel. I was taking it apart to see why it was squeaking (trapped sawdust) when the idea hit me – drill the existing screw holes all the way through the body, and get a longer screw to hold the dremel together (like the old screws) and hold the dremel to the base. Well, I didn’t have a screw quite that long and thin, but I did have some short screws of the correct diameter. S...

Hello fellow Lumber Jocks! I’m starting a little blog series on my work-in-progress DIY lathe. In short, I want to build a lathe to turn a few pens, without spending ~$60 some on specifically pen turning materials and ~$200 on a lathe.

Having successfully burned out my Dremel, I went for the cordless drill as well as my chisels. Judging by the amount of wood i still had to go through, I’d have likely killed another dremel in the process! I guess they are made for lots of different jobs, not so much hogging off wood for extended periods. I’ll definately be looking into those carving tools Dick suggested.

First the bad news, just after my Bro-in law rec’d his homemade 6-in-1 mahogany screwdriver for christmas (and my nephew asked if he was really going to use it) it broke. Apparently the fact that I made it was a miracle, as I misjudged and left the wall closest to the business end very thin. First attempt was only a success in working out all the details in getting it on the lathe, and then off in one piece. Another second and It would have exploded on me.

Last time I merely defined the legs (or let the crack and grain define them for me), twists and all. Today, armed with some new attachements for the Dremel I cut two channels clean on though to the middle, “freeing” one leg, and nearly completeing the third channel to free the other two. Apart from the wood on the surface, this is some nice, hard wood, and was putting up quite a fight, so this is the progress so far. The Dremel was starting to heat up, and I think I’ll need ...

Quick update after such a long (long) break from this project. As previously blogged elsewhere, the lamp will indeed be made from a single piece of lilac with the lower portion divided into three legs straddling a stone.
Took months of on-and-off pondering, and some brainstorming, but now, having worked out the next few challenging steps, I can put the “lamp back on!”
Today I took my Dremel to the cracks and splits on one end (after finally deciding which end was up) and...
