DIY Lathe #1: Introduction

560 days ago by Marcel T | 9 comments »

Hello fellow Lumber Jocks! I’m starting a little blog series on my work-in-progress DIY lathe. In short, I want to build a lathe to turn a few pens, without spending ~$60 some on specifically pen turning materials and ~$200 on a lathe. So, I want to try turning. I’ve always considered myself a handyman-esque person, and I had that urge to build! The tipping point was when I found a few blogs such as AfriGadget, StreetUse and Future Perfect. Their owners travel a lot, and they notice ingenu...

HELP NEEDED: Name For The "HomeJocks" Site

665 days ago by Martin Sojka | 116 comments »

With LumberJocks expanding and GardenTenders growing so nice, I think it’s the right time to add the third related site into the mix. It was requested numerous times here on the LumberJocks… the site with the same format covering all about home building, remodeling, decorating and improvement. Debbie came up with the perfect GardenTenders name but now we’re struggling a bit with this new name. The requirements are: It should fit the LumberJocks, GardenTenders naming ...

DIY Lathe #2: The better base!

553 days ago by Marcel T | 2 comments »

Hey guys! Taking advantage of the long weekend here in Canada, (so this was last weekend) I made a better base for my dremel. I was taking it apart to see why it was squeaking (trapped sawdust) when the idea hit me – drill the existing screw holes all the way through the body, and get a longer screw to hold the dremel together (like the old screws) and hold the dremel to the base. Well, I didn’t have a screw quite that long and thin, but I did have some short screws of the correct diameter. S...

Log Home Building Course #1: It's spring...

757 days ago by daltxguy | 6 comments »

...in the southern hemisphere. The days are getting longer, the temperatures warmer, the leaves are out again and the rhodos are blooming. That means more shop time (I’ve got an unheated garage for a workshop) and more projects – I’ve got a slew in the pipeline: some pressies in the form of some small food storage containers, one of those Wood Whisperer’s boards is glued up and ready for phase 2 cutting and I’ve got a custom TV stand for a friend nearly ready fo...

New Home Page Tells More About Us

885 days ago by Martin Sojka | 44 comments »

I got an idea last week to make our home page more inviting to new visitors. The idea was to introduce our community – us – through showing what we love. All those “latest” boxes (projects, blogs, forums) were nice but was telling nothing special about us. Now we have 4 main sections on the home page: we love to work the wood – featured LumberJock spotlight. This section shows 5 project of randomly selected LumberJock on each page reload. To have the opportu...

Better Home for Each LumberJock

857 days ago by Martin Sojka | 28 comments »

You can finally enjoy the result of my latest work. We got MUCH IMPROVED personal home pages here on the LumberJocks as well as better organization of the profile and account editing. The former personal homes were not visually appealing and displayed only minimal amount of content. On the other hand, new ones have rich 3-column layout with lots of info about you and your activity on LumberJocks. I believe they represent something you can be proud of and are worth sharing with your friends...
