Nifty laser use

1180 days ago by swirlsandburls | 4 comments »

I am working on a commission project that required me to make a rather large hollow cylinder. It needed to be 9” in diameter with a 1/2” wall thickness, and about 11 inches long. The client wanted to use Jatoba, which I could only get in lumber, so I glued up an octagon to work from. That part as well as cutting the OD was simple, but hollowing out the interior was a challenge. I decided to set up my Jamieson deep hollowing rig, and then realized that I could also set ...

Gloat: New John Jordan Hollowing Tool

1260 days ago by JamesVavra | 0 comments »

In anticipation of Trifern's upcoming class on hollow forms, I ordered the 1/2” hollowing set from John Jordan yesterday morning at 9:41 AM. About 15 minutes ago, the mailman dropped it at my front door – that’s a 25 hour turn around folks. That’s the straight and curved tool, a spare set of cutters, the 18” handle, and the sharpening jig. James

turnings #10: Newfound respect for hollow-form turners

1830 days ago by Gary Fixler | 10 comments »

Well, I tried out the tools I got from mom for my birthday recently. Of note: 1) My 1/2” Sorby Spindlemaster was not a good indicator of how the 3/4” and 1” behave. I’ve been using the 1/2” however I liked, never reading up on how to use it, nor watching any videos. I recently watched one and thought “Huh, I’ve been using it entirely wrong.” I’ve been holding it flat, and using a combination of things with both hands and the tool rest t...

If someone could please give me any information or a link on such a tool or where to buy one that would be really helpful. Thanks!Rockydog

Making Lathe Tools #2: Update

1027 days ago by Big Ben | 3 comments »

In researching making my own hollowing tools I have come into one main problem. I am a wood worker and don’t have metal working tools (and no intention to). I have received a good amount feedback concerning the amount of heat I will need to get the rod in a malleable state. This is one my concerns, the other is drilling into the end of the rod.Today I went by several machine shops to see what the cost for bending and drilling the rods. I would tap the rods myself. None of them provide the ...

Model Bell 407 helicopter project #5: Cutting the body open.

896 days ago by Ryan Haasen | 4 comments »

So fo the past while I have been sanding the body to shape. I was also doing anything I could to avoid facing the challenge of cutting the body apart. I was afraid of doing so because it is not a cheap chunk of wood, and also all the effort put into getting the shape correct shape made it more special. Then one day I decided it had to be done and I did it. And that new bandsaw got quite the workout. It did go better then I expected with the minor flaw here and there. after the walls were ...
