First of all let me say that this is the first hand plane I have ever made. I looked at some plans to get the general idea, but basically I am making it up as I go. There are things I did wrong but I will be able to fix them.
I saw this type of sole on some planes in magazines and always wondered how they did it.It took me a while but I figured it out. Simple once you know how.

Last night I decided to commit to some face planing to get my boards ready for the glue-up. I’ve cut rough dimensions of the four stretchers and two boards each to make up two legs. To do this, I need to joint plane the faces so I get a good flat surface to merge. Afterwards, I will be finishing up the dimensions to exact measurements and smooth planing. Unfortunately, I don’t have a quality hand plane in my arsenal.

Just playing around in the shop and came accross these planes. I made them a couple years ago, and really enjoyed it.
Nothing too fancy, and the basic plans came from a book on making hand planes.
They are a pleasure to use as the shavings come peeling through the throat opening. That nice whoosh sound that only planes make, and shavings thin enough to read through!
And a polished surface that’s left behind. So much satisfaction in using them, knowing you made them.

This morning I got up, threw my tool hunting pack and my son in the car and headed out to see what would come our way. We made our way across town to the local Woodcraft store, stopping at a few yard sales along the way. We did not find much of interest other than a trashed yankee drill that happend to have all of its original drill bits in its storage area. A buck later and we were on our way.
