Hi Friend! I know for most of us here, woodworking isn’t our only hobby or job we make a living off of! For me, one of my many hobbies is scuba diving! I have been in the midst of a kitchen remodel (more on that below) for a couple of months now and could sure use a trip right about now! I have been certified for almost 15 years now and it is one of the most exciting hobbies I have. I have been all around the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, as well as a few Pacific Coast dives. Being i...

It’s about the practice. Saw a video this morning emphasizing this, someone doing very nice calligraphy with a crayon marker. It is an excellent reminder that craftsmanship is about something other than collecting the finest tools. I’ve been a musician, of one sort or another, for most of my life. While I occasionally get paid gigs, this is another hobby for me, and I’m driven to find ways of playing better, learning new tunes and songs, and then learning how to master...

A change in woodworking habit and environment #2: Brain clutter and a new mindset

In the last article, I talked about cleaning up my work environment to allow for shorter setup times and more ready access to the machines and items in my workshop. But that is only part of the battle. I experienced some personal loss this last year that really took the wind out of my sails. The long cold winter swept over Jones County. It had been days since I had ventured past the threshold and I was nearly out of pot stickers. The Meeks residence was at Defcon 2. I was getting stir crazy. Action needed to be taken, so I bundled up, put on a sweatshirt and a coat, followed naturally by one additional coat, and topped off with a pair of gloves and a smart chapeau. The world outside waited and I was certain that there may would be an impulse tool purchase in my very near...

My Journey So Far

01-16-2008 12:07 PM by Eric | 4 comments »

[Taken from my Adventures in Woodworking blog, August 2007] A few years ago, I came to the realization that I didn’t have any significant hobbies or leisure that did not involve the computer. This is not good. So one day, I brainstormed with my wife as to what hobby I should take up, and ended up choosing woodworking. I think the main reason was that I did not consider myself a handyman, and wanted to be able to build or fix things with my own two hands. I began my hobby while sti...

Blasphemy: My Other Hobby

07-23-2007 02:43 AM by DocK16 | 13 comments »

I know this is a wood working site but it is that time of year when my other hobby cuts into my shop time. I do use my shop to build the boxes (called supers) which are held together with box/finger joints. Anyway its honey collecting time but I hope to get back in the shop soon and finish the craddle I started last month.
