On any given sunday, you just never know what lies in the back of an old van or pick up truck when it comes to digging out old hand tools at a flea market.
I usuallly try to visit my friend Ralph once a month to see what tools he has come across in his picks. Ralph gets around here and there during the weeks….and I am very sure more than a few old New Jersey barns as well as other interesting places are where he acquires things like he was about to showcase for me today.

Hey friends, back here in the Old Time Wood Shop with some more exercises…..or,.... trouble to get into…..lol. This time it was setting up a top for my Rustic Renaissance Trestle Table.
After some mock ups of various boards to view thickness, width, etc. I finally decided to just give a go at working up a top with a thick piece of laminated construction pine. This would be all new territory for me….never did a table, never laminated together boards to make a top. Might as...

Wire wheel, wd-40, sandpaper and my hands filled with dirt, grease and hard work…...I truely get a chance to see and feel the contours of these wonderful crafted pieces…...I can’t help but to ask myself more than once…what happened to such well made and designed tools?
The curves…the artwork, iron and wood highlighted sometimes with brass…...the time and quality these instruments were made with….I can only hope to give back half of the hardwork in ...

It’s something about the color of the aged wood mixed with black iron that gives it a feel of a time far gone and yet of great interest to the modern day handtool enthusiast.
I think simply put…my love of traditional handtools and their uses are because in todays high tech modern society it has no business being conducted at all…lol. I love that fact…it’s a dinosaur and caveman pastime…and the masses of hurried gadget grabbers and stressed out overachiev...

Shavings, sawdust, chisels scattered about…and the joyful noise of the mallet sending the message from hands to tenon to mortice….this round of the build contained much learning and honest work. Looking back through these last 2 blogs…..I feel encouraged and seeing my skills grow, sure there are some mistakes but I really see the value my time has bought me with my with study and self challenge.
I would say in review of the last two years playing with all of this woodshop...

Posted a ‘Shop Notes’ entry some time ago to talk about a big ‘ole pine dovetailed box I bought at a local auction.
Not absolutely certain it was ever a tool chest, but I won’t rule it out either. Some points to consider on the tool chest vs. plain box discussion:
- There’s no evidence it ever had sliding trays or inserts. Not that they’re required, I suppose, but modern authors suggest that’s the historical norm. Maybe the builder wasn’t norm.

Well here I am once more working on something that’s a first for me, seeing things as I go and gaining more experience with each shaving thick or thin. These exercises in artisanship have taught me a great amount of many do’s and some don’ts…lol
For this project I wanted a piece that I could have in my living room that had a feeling of energy and a renaissance vibe to it. I have had the opportunity so far to laminate, cut and smooth out my first set of legs.

It was a humid mid morning…...I mean so humid that most of the outside auction tables were packing things up to head back home from all the uncomforable temperatures and lack of sales. As soon as we exited the truck my Father and I felt as if we were going into a suana, the small breezes were even warm….not the best weather for an energy filled pick…lol
A few tables up on the left there were two very beat down and rusty braces on a table of assorted junk, I picked them up...

Hello everyone, an extremely humid day today with around 82% humidity and 95 the high temp, but somehow the spirit of an evening of creating was to be had….lol. My shop has little more than a fan or heater….so this was going to get warm…lol
This is a project that I have been wanting to do for a while now. I have always enjoyed the extreme creativity of the Rennaissance period and I thought it would be a real challenge and adventure to have a go at my version of a trestle ...

Well….... a cleaning we still go here at the old time woodshop. The oil and wire wheel spin on and try their best to revive some oldies but goodies.
