Hello friends, I have been meaning to share some tales of a wonderful trip I took at the end of August to upstate NY. Finally I have the chance to get this story and the pictures uploaded. I hope you may enjoy this blog and I thank you for taking a moment and reading….here we go!.......... The road was a winding ride through the beautiful tall green trees of upstate NY. The mountains were a backdrop of a totally peaceful environment showing strength and inviting calm. Around this are...

Tool Cabinet Build #5: Tool Layout and Tambour Doors 1..

207 days ago by Airframer | 16 comments »

Had an unexpected early day at work today (which was nice after nearly 2 weeks of 15+ hour days) so I took advantage of it and started laying out the tool storage preliminary plan. Here is the rough idea.. From the front minus doors.. Behind the plane till and tool storage will be a secondary wall that separates the planes and tools from a pair of saw tills hidden in the back wall. And a quick mock-up to see it in scale.. the saws on the front will be in the back in their ...

Hello friends! Once again I want to thank you all so much for your comments on my last blog. It was really great to hear from you all again. It was just what I needed to resurrect my soul full of ideas and woodworking spirit. My last project some years ago…lol, well it felt like years ago..lol, was going to be my Country Carving Throne. Well folks because I left that project on the shelf for so long I honestly decided to leave it on hold for for now. A few misfortunes of my mallet bl...

Handcrafted Country Carvers Throne PT 2

431 days ago by jjw5858 | 9 comments »

Well friends, it has been one cold temperature spell the last few weeks here in my shop as you may have realized from past blogs. I finally got a chance to tend back to my main project, something new to me as I have never created a seat of any kind before. I have found the process a lot to learn regarding proper pitch/splay when boring in the legs. It is really nothing all that complicated all the while nothing to get careless with either. Soon the time approached for me to address my i...

Exercises in Artisanship #34: Handcrafted Country Carvers Throne PT 1

449 days ago by jjw5858 | 9 comments »

Time to travel some different roads this journey and see what becomes of my new project…...The handcrafted country carving throne (AKA milking stool)....lmao! I do try to add entertainment value to these whacky ideas of mine…..so please work with my insanity folks….lol. I was tossing around various ideas and as the game sometimes goes I just could not get a design topic that made me start to have that creative spark. Then…..so natural I thought, I could use a little...

Spoon carvers diary #1: Keeping sanity in spoondum!

453 days ago by jjw5858 | 4 comments »

It was good to hike again, the outside air was cool and crisp as I discovered just how much paper birch draped the edges of the pond that was once frozen. It’s amazing how only a year ago I would not have been able to identify so many of the trees I walked past when hiking. Perhaps I simply took them for granted. My interests although still in woodworking were not nearly as deeply investigated in green timber as they are now. A great deal of my exercises, projects, or ideas were performed ...

The old time woodshop journals #38: Woodworker's Revival

472 days ago by jjw5858 | 7 comments »

Many times I ponder the current state of our lives on this pale blue dot better known as earth. I witness the more than horrible events of random shootings of children, firemen, and street kids in poor neighborhoods and sometimes think that perhaps my childhood was way too easy, maybe even a bit unrealistic. I have never been a member of any church or one set in stone belief, and I am fully accepting of anyone who believes full on in theirs as long as your not at my door pushing it on me. ...
