Posted a ‘Shop Notes’ entry some time ago to talk about a big ‘ole pine dovetailed box I bought at a local auction.
Not absolutely certain it was ever a tool chest, but I won’t rule it out either. Some points to consider on the tool chest vs. plain box discussion:
- There’s no evidence it ever had sliding trays or inserts. Not that they’re required, I suppose, but modern authors suggest that’s the historical norm. Maybe the builder wasn’t norm.
- No mortise lock, only a ring for ...

Sawdust, shavings, and a lot of water in these heat wave shop exercises has brought me to my newest updates on this Rustic Renaissance Trestle Table. This project has been a lot of fun and also filled with challenges along the way…..the biggest is the heat we have been enduring these past weeks….YIIIKES 100 degrees??......bring back the fall!....lol.
So when I have been able to sneak out and get some more decent temperatures to work with I set about my task at adding side piece...

Hi all. I wanted to introduce myself and present all you fellow ‘jocks with my current project. It’s a little design I’ve had whirling around my head for some time. It’s an Arts & Crafts inspired small table to go next to the sofa and hold ‘her in doors’ cup of tea whilest watching TV of an evening.
Here’s a shot of a dry fit and unfinished top:
I’m currently in the middle of a glue up of the leg assemblies, and a mitred frame to s...

Wire wheel, wd-40, sandpaper and my hands filled with dirt, grease and hard work…...I truely get a chance to see and feel the contours of these wonderful crafted pieces…...I can’t help but to ask myself more than once…what happened to such well made and designed tools?
The curves…the artwork, iron and wood highlighted sometimes with brass…...the time and quality these instruments were made with….I can only hope to give back half of the hardwork in ...

Hey friends, back here in the Old Time Wood Shop with some more exercises…..or,.... trouble to get into…..lol. This time it was setting up a top for my Rustic Renaissance Trestle Table.
After some mock ups of various boards to view thickness, width, etc. I finally decided to just give a go at working up a top with a thick piece of laminated construction pine. This would be all new territory for me….never did a table, never laminated together boards to make a top. Might as...

Well there I was walking down each outdoor lane of auction tables…not much on this day I was afraid. A few rusted junked brace and bits…ahhh…..gotta pass….got too many as it is…lol, another old beaten down plastic handle handplane…I can live without that…lol, finally in the corner of my eye..what is this???
Well…. the closer my focus the sad reality of two old disston saws..USA’s…not old as in collectable…but old as in ugly ...

It’s something about the color of the aged wood mixed with black iron that gives it a feel of a time far gone and yet of great interest to the modern day handtool enthusiast.
I think simply put…my love of traditional handtools and their uses are because in todays high tech modern society it has no business being conducted at all…lol. I love that fact…it’s a dinosaur and caveman pastime…and the masses of hurried gadget grabbers and stressed out overachiev...

Hi once again friends hope this Monday has been treating you well. I thought it might be time to add my third installment of my latest blog and project “Making a saw handle” and I hope you have all enjoyed this mini-series as much as I have in building and posting the progress.
As I have gone on with this build some mistakes were made. I expected greater miscues than I got keeping in mind this is only a first full out attempt at making, fitting and using a handsaw handle…...
